FRANK H; MELVILLE, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR SECURING AND CARRYING PAPER BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,858., dated August 7, 1877; application filed July 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. MELVILLE, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing and Carrying Water-Proof and other Paper Bags; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanyiing drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper bag with my improvement attached thereto; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the blank from which my improvement is formed; Fig. 3, a
perspective view of the metal strip as applied to the bag.
This invention relates to improvements in devices adapted for securing and carrying water-proof and other paper bags, whereby the contents of the bag are securely confined therein, and the bag conveniently carried and the invention consists in the combination, with a water-proof or other paper bag, of a detachable metallic strip, to which a cord or other equivalent device is attached, said strip being secured to the bag in the manner hereinafter fully described.
A in the drawing represents a water-proof bag, for containing and carrying ice-cream, oysters, beer, ale, porter, molasses, vinegar, pickles, &c. B is a metallic strip formed from a single piece of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 2. This metal strip is cut entirely through on the lines a a, and is folded over longitudinally and centrally, as shown in Fig. 3, and between said folds is secured a cord, 0, or other equivalent device. This strip is secured to the bag by folding the top edges of the bag over the strip and the ends I) b of the strip,
(formed by cutting the blank as above de scribed,) which extend beyond the bag, are turned back and folded over the folds of the bag, covering the strip a, which secures said strip to the bag.
This device, as applied to paper bags, securely confines the material contained therein, and also serves to confine and secure a cord or equivalent device for carrying the bag with its contents.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with a Water-proof or other paper bag, of a detachable metallic strip, B, applied thereto substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The metallic strip, B formed from a single blank of metal, cut entirely through on the lines a a, and folded overlongitudinally and centrally, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a paper bag, of the metallic strip B, inclosing the cord 0, snbstantially as and for the purpose specified.
FRANK H. MELVILLE. Witnesses:
