Description

E. MEIER.
JAR-COVER.
Patented June 5,1877.
I NVENTU N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D Cv UNITED STATES EDWARD MEIER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN JAR-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,541,
dated June 5, 1877; application filed May 17, 1877.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MEIER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Oovers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in crock and jar covers; and it consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement of parts that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby a cheap, simple, and efficient cover is produced.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents a circular piece of pasteboard or other hard material of any desired size. Pasted or otherwise secured to the top of this piece of board is a sheet of paper, parchment, or other similar material, b, which is considerably larger than the pasteboard, so that its outer edges will project out beyond the outer edges of the pasteboard. The outer edges of this paper are intended to be turned or folded down around the sides of the top of the crock or jar, for the purpose of making the same dust-tight. Fastened to the edge of this paper on one side, by means of any suitable device, is a band of rubber cord, or band of any kind, (1, by means of which the folded-down edges of the paper are held pressed tightly against the sides of the crock or jar. By thus fastening a band of rubber to the paper the fastening device and the cover are always attached together, and the rubber band can be quickly and readily slipped around the turned-down portion of the paper, so as to hold it securely in posiion. By means of the piece of pasteboard a the cover is made strong, hard, and durable, and the contents of the jar can be written upon the cover. It also makes the cover sufficiently strong to allow small or light articles to be placed upon the top of the jar without danger of breaking through the cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the pasteboard a, paper b, and a fastening-band, d, the fastening band being attached to the paper so as to always be ready for use, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of May, 1877.
EDWARD MEIER. Witnesses:
