SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,053, dated July 11, 1893.

Application filed August 29, 1892. Serial No. 444,489- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES E. BURKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oyster-Sacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of the invention and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse central section of the same, the box being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line w-w, Fig. 1.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in paper receptacles designed to contain merchandise in liquid or solid form, and especially adapted for use as oyster sacks.

The particular class of such articles to which the invention relates, is that such as shown and described in the patent to Olive H. Hicks, dated November 2, 1886, No. 351,980, and reissued May 15, 1888, No. 10,929; the improvement consisting in the manner of reinforcing the upper or closing edges of the receptacle, and in the means employed for securing the said edges together when the receptacle is filled, whereby the integral cover is rendered more close-fitting, and there is less possibility for the liquid contents splashing or spilling from between the said edges.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the receptacle of the character set forth in the patentabove referred to.

B, B designate two reinforcing strips of wood or other suitable material, one of said strips being held longitudinally along each closing edge of the receptacle between the thicknesses formed by the body portion A, and the angular side laps O, O. The strip B as shown, is secured in place by the wire staples a, a, while the strip B is held by means of the end portions of the wire forming the bail D.

Integral with one of the side laps G on one side of the receptacle, I form an extension or tongue E, which is arranged to fold down over the closingedges of the cover, and draw them closely together.

F designates my improved clasp, comprising a piece of metal pivoted to one of the edges of the cover by means of the wire forming the bail or handle D. At its other end, said piece is bent into a U-like clasp which closes down over and embraces the closing edges and the tongue E. The direction of the swing of said clasp, it will be observed, is parallel to the direction of the said edges. By

the above construction, not only are the closing edges greatly strengthened and enabled to come into close unbroken contact with each other, but they are held together in a rigid manner without the possibility of tearing or giving away.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a folded vessel or sack, the combination with the closing edges thereof, of the reinforcing strips B, B, one of said strips being held longitudinally along each of said closing edges between the thicknesses formed by the body portion A of said sack or vessel, and its angular side laps G, C, securing staples a, a, through one of said strips, and its inclosing thicknesses, a tongue E on one of said side laps or extensions 0, arranged to fold over the said closing edges, a bail D the ends of which secure the other of said reinforcing strips in place, and a clasp F comprising a strip of metal pivoted at one end to said bail, and having at its other end a U-like clasp which is arranged to embrace said closing edges, extensions 0, and reinforcing strips, substantially as specified.
