Description

June 20, 1933. J. A. ONEIL 1,914,571
INDEX TAB Filed Sept 29, 1952 Patented June 28, 1933 UNETED STATES PATENT? @FFICE JOSEPH A. ONEIL, F TOLEDO, OHIO INDEX TAB Application filed. September 29, 1932. Serial No. 635,329.
0 to be produced at a minimum cost,
Other objects and advantages will here inafter appear, and for purposes of illustration, but not of limitation, an embodiment of the invention is shown on the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the card which is attached to the clip;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clip and card showing the latter partially folded;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tab in folded position, a portion of the card being broken away to show the clip;
Figure 5 is a View of the tab attached to a sheet; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional elevation on the line 66 of Figure 5.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a clip C which is formed from a single length of wire bent to form a substantially M-shaped body 10 and reversely bent portions 11 on the free ends of the arms 12 of the body. The central portion 13 of the M-shaped body terminates a short distance inwardly of the outer ends of the arms 12 and, it will be observed that the Various bends, such as indicated at 1 1, are substantially rectangular or provide U-shaped corners. The reversely-bent end portions 11 incline outwardly and are preferably relatively short 0 along fold lines 18 and 19 respectively. The
card may be of any suitable length and the width of the panels, is determined by the clip C, as will hereinafter appear.
The clip C is attached to the card D as follows; the edge portion of the panel 16 is inserted between the central portion 13 of the clip body and the legs 12 until the lower end of the former abuts against the fold line 18. The central panel 15 is then folded against the clip as indicated in Figure 3. It will be seen that the lower portion of the arms 12 6 extend beyond the panel 16 (see Fig. 6). The outer panel 17 is then folded downwardly along the line 19 and the marginal edge is inserted between the arms 12 and the reverselybent end portions 11, as shown in Figure 41.
This positions the lower edge of the panel 17 below the adjacent edge of the panel 16 so that the tab can be more conveniently slipped over an edge of a sheet S. Since the clip is formed of spring wire, a clamping force is exerted against the sides of the sheet S for securely retaining the tab by frictional contact in the desired position.
It is apparent that the clip C is securely held against movement transversely of the card D and the marginal edges of the card are firmly held from unfolding by the clip. The length of the central portion 13 determines the width of the central panel and by having the corners 14 flattened or squared, the
may be effected without departing from the invention.
What I claim is:
1. An index tab comprising a spring clip having a substantially [Vi-shaped body and. reversely bent portions on the free arms of the body, a card having three parallel panels with the end panels arranged in overlapping relation, the inner of said overlapping panels being disposed between the central portion and legs of said clip, and the outer of said overlapping panels being disposed between the legs and reversely bent portions of said cli 5. An index tab comprising a spring clip having a pair of card clamps, and a card having a central panel and a pair of end panels joined to the central panel along fold lines, an outer panel being disposed in one clamp and the other outer panel being folded over said first outer panel and disposed in the other clamp.
3. An index tab comprising a card having a central panel and a pair of end panels connected to the central panel along fold lines, with one end panel folded over the other, a spring clip clamping the inner of said overlapping end panels, and reversely-bent end portions on said clip disposed on the outer face of said inner end panel, the free edge portion of the outer of said end panels being disposed in said reversely-bent end portions.
l. The combination of a card adapted to be attached to sheet material and having three panel portions with one panel disposed between the other two, a spring clip clamped to the inner panel transversely thereof, a reversely bent portion on said clip adjacent the outer edge thereof to receive a free edge portion of an outer panel, and a connection between the other outer panel and one of the remaining panels.
5. An index tab comprising a card having a central panel and apair of end panels connected to the central panel along fold lines with one end panel folded over the other, a spring clip having substantially M-shaped body with the V portion thereof cooperating with the legs to clamp an edge portion of the inner end panel therebetween, reversely bent portions on the ends of the legs to receive the edge portion of the outer end panel.
6. An index tab comprising a card having a central panel and a pair of end panels connected to the central panel along fold lines with one end panel folded over the other, a spring clip having substantially M-shaped body with the V portion thereof cooperating with the legs to clamp an edge portion of the inner end panel therebetween, the length of the legs of the M-shaped clip being slightly greater than the width of said central panel, reversely bent portions on the ends of the legs to receive the edge portion of the outer end panel.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
