This invention relates to the manufacture of linoleum or like material, and is an improvement in or modification of the lnvention described in Letters Patent of the 5 United States #1,848,776, issued to me on March 8, 1932.

In the said patent, I claimed the method of providing the edge of linoleum 0r l 1ke material with a line of material resembling mortar, glue or the like, which consists in superimposing a plurality of pieces or layers of the linoleum or like material with separating material, such as thin metal or other hard material, between the said pieces or layers, pressing on to the edges thereof a sheet of material resembling mortar, glue or the like, whereby the sheet is cut through by the separating material, and forced on to the edge of the linoleum, and removing the V separating material. In one way of carryinto a coil to form a plurality of layers and in some cases the strip of linoleum was subsequently divided into rectangles Wh 1ch were placed end to end on a strip of thin metal or other hard material which was then rolled into a coil to receive sheets of material resembling mortar glue or the like (hereinafter referred to a mortar) on the other edges of the rectangles. v p

According to the present invention lnstead of employing thin metal or other hard material as separating material which cuts through the sheet of material resembling mortar I separate the pieces or layers of 4 linoleum by means of paper or other suitable material such for example as tape. If a strip of linoleum and a strip ofpaper (preferably of the same width as the strip of linoleum) be superimposed and wound into a coil and a sheet of material resembling desired be separated by two strips of paper to facilitate unwinding of the coil.

Since, unless the sheet of mortar be comparatively thin, for example of an inch or less, the edges of the mortar are liable to be ragged, I preferably provide a knife so positioned as to out through the mortar as the coil is unwound.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic elevation and, Figure 2 a plan View. Figures 3 and 4 are similar detail views of a modification. l 1

Referring more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, 1 indicates a strip of linoleum which has been wound together with a strip of paper 2 of the same Width into a coil on to which a sheet of mortar has been pressed, the sheet adhering to the coil.

Figure 1' illustrates the coil being unwound and it will be seen that the paper strip causes the sheet of mortar to tear along lines adjacent the edges of the linoleum strip, so that the linoleum strip is provided along its edges with a line of mortar as is indicated at 3 in Figure 2.

The paper strip, as it separates from the linoleum strip is wound into a coil as indicated at 4 in Figure 1.

In order to facilitate the unwinding of the coil a second strip of paper indicated by the dotted line 5 in Figure 1 may be employed.

Unless the sheet of mortar be comparatively thin, the edges of the mortar are liable to be ragged. Preferably a knife 6 is provided between the strip of linoleum and the strip of paper to cut through the sheet of mortar as the coil is unwound, the knife being slidably mounted on guides 7 so that it can rest on and follow the coil as it decreases -1n dlameter due to its unwinding.

When two strips of paper are employed,

9 may be employed one at each face of the coil, as is shown in Figures 3 and 4.

The separation of superposed pieces of linoleum as is also described and claimed in my said Patent ail-1,848,776 can be effected by pieces of paper or like material. The term paper-like material as here inafter used is designed to include not only paper, but tape or other like strip material, as distinguished from steel or other hard material.

What I claim is 1. The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in superimposing a plurality of layers of the linoleum with material which acts as a separating medium between said layers, pressing on to theedges of the layers the material resembling jointing material, and in substantially simultaneously removing said separating material and severing the material resembling jointing material along lines intervening between successive layers of linoleum.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in superimposing a strip of linoleum and a strip of materialwhich acts as a separating medium, winding said strips into a coil, pressing on to the edges of the coil the material resembling the jointing. material, and in substantially simultaneously unwinding said coil, removing the separating material, and severing the material resembling jointing material along lines intervening between successive layers of linoleum.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in superimposing a plurality of layers of the linoleum with paper between said layers, pressing on to the edges of the layers thematerial resembling jointing material, and in substantially simultaneously removing the said paperand severing the material resembling jointing material along lines intervening between successive layers of linoleum.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, Wl11Cl1 consists in superimposing a strlp of llnoleum and a strip of paper, winding said strips into a coil. pressing on to the edges of the coil the material resembling the jointing material, and in substantially simultaneously unwinding said coil, removing the paper, and severing the material resembling jointing material along lines intervening between successive layers of linoleum.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in superimposing a plurality of layers of the linoleum with material which acts as a separating medium between said layers, pressing on to the edges of the layers the material resembling jointing material, removing said separating material, and cutting the material resembling jointing material as the lino- 3 leum separates from the separating material. 6. The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in superimposing astrip o1 linoleum and a strip of material which acts as a separating medium, winding said strips intoa coil, pressing on to the edges of the coil the material resembling the jointing material, unwinding said coil and removing the separating material, and cutting the material resembling jointing material as the linoleum separates from the separating material.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in super imposing a plurality of layers of the linoleum with paper between said layers, pressing on to the edges of the layers the material resembling jointingmaterial, removing the T said paper, and cutting the material resembling jointing material as the linoleum separates from the paper.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material, which consists in superimposing a strip oflinoleum and a strip of paper, winding said strips into a coil, pressing on to the edges of the coil the material resembling the ointing material, unwinding said coil and removing the paper, and cutting the material resembling jointing material as the linoleum separates from the paper.

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a ointing material, which consists in superimposing a strip of linoleum and a plurality of strips of paper, winding said linoleum and paper strips into a coil, pressing on to the edges of the coil the material resembling the jointing material, and unwinding said coil and removing the paper. v

The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling imposing a strip of linoleum and a plurality of strips of paper, winding said linoleum and paper strips into a coil, pressing on to the edges of the coil the material resembling the jointing material, unwinding said coil and removing the paper, and cutting the material resembling jointing material as the linoleum separates from the paper.

11. That method consisting in superimposplying a strip of material resembling a jointing material to edges of said layers, and in substantially simultaneously separating said layers and severing the strip along the line of separation of said layers.

13. The method according to claim 11 wherein the severing of the strip is efi ected by tearing.

14. The method according to claim 12 wherein the severing of the material is effected by tearing.

15. That method consisting in coiling superimposed strips of linoleum and thin paper-like material with the latter projecting eyond one side edge of the linoleum, and in applying a strip of material resembling a jointing material against said side edge with the projecting paper-like material extending into the same and serving to sever it.

16. The method of providing the edge of linoleum with a strip of material resembling a jointing material which consists in superimposing a plurality of layers of the linoleum with paper-l ke material which acts as a separating medium between said layers, pressing on to the edges of the layers the material resembling jointing material, and severing the material resembling jointing material along lines intervening between successive layers of linoleum.
