Description

March 1932. A. A. GODFREY 1,843,777
MANUFACTURE OF LINOLEUM OR LIKE MATERIAL Original Filed April 20. 1929 Patented Mar. 8, 1932' r TENT oFnc ALFRED ARTHUR GODFREY, OF LONDON; ENGLA D; AssIGNoR'ro LINoLEUMivmriu- FACTURING- COMPANY, LIMITED, or ronnon, nnernnn v MANUFACTURE or LINOIiEUM 'o LIKE AT RIAL Original application filed April 20, 1929; Serial No. 356,778, and oin Great Britain Ma a,
and. this application filed May 22, 1930;] Serial No. 454;693.
1' sembling a jointing material, by superimposing a strip of linoleum and a strip of thin hard separating material, winding the strips into a coil, pressing on to the edge thereof the material resembling the jointing mate- 1 5 rial to cause the said material to be cut by the separating material and to be forced on to the edge of the linoleum, andthen unwinding the coil and removing the separating material.
According to the present invention the method consists in assembling a plurality of pieces of the linoleum with pieces of separating material between them, the material resembling jointing material being pressed on to the edges of the separating material to cause the said material to be cut by the separating material and to be forced on to the edges of the linoleum pieces, and then removing the separating pieces.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, Figures 2 and 3 sections showing superposed linoleum pieces with the thin hard separating material between them, Figure 2 showing the superposed pieces before the material resembling jointing material has been pressed thereon, and Figure 3 after the material has been pressed thereon, and Figure 4 a plan view showing a finished tessera. Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modification. p
1 indicates pieces of linoleum which are superposed and separated by pieces 2 of thin steel which are slightly larger than the pieces of linoleum. Sheets ofmaterial resembling V mortar are then pressed agalnst the edges of the pile and are cut through by the edges of the steel and adhere to the edges of the linoleum, as shown in Figure 3'. The pieces are then separated, and the tesseree thus formed willbe provided, ea'chiedge, with a thin" strip ofv material 3 resembling mortar, as is shownfin Figure ll 7 i i. The tesserae thusformed may, if desired, be
laid "upon the usual canvas backing to form any desired patterngand rolled, or the tesserae may be employed as separate blocks.
' In the modification shown inFigure 5, plain'cut tessarae 4 are placededge to edge H B0 3 onFaf steel strip.- 5,fwhich is slightly wider than the linoleum'pieces and which is then wound into a coil. I r Y 1 The sheet of material resembling mortar 192s, Divided is pressedon tothe faces of the coil, the sheets I thus .--being.cut 'through"byi"the edges of the steel strip, and; adhering to the edges of the linoleum pieces; The coil is then unwound, and the pieces of linoleumremoved and replaced with ttheirother edges parallel with A the edges of the steel strip, as isshown in this figure, the process thenbeing repeated.
