Abstract

Floor coverings of tiled or like pattern are made by stacking or coiling a series of tesser of vulcanized rubber &c., coating the exposed edges with raw rubber applied in sheet, paste, or solution form, separating the tesser , assembling them to pattern, if desired on a backing, and vulcanizing them together in a press. The first stage of the process may be the production of tesser coated on two edges by winding a strip of vulcanized rubber into a coil, coating the faces of the coil, unwinding it and cutting into tesser ; the second stage then consists in placing the tesser on a temporary backing strip, winding this into a coil, and coating the faces of the coil (i.e. the two edges of each tessera not previously coated). In an alternative form of the invention, blocks or strips of raw rubber which may form part of the pattern are interposed between sections of vulcanized material and vulcanized to unite the whole.
