A I Joli ANK/wit WW MTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. KRATT, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,250, dated March 13, 1877; application filed February 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. KRATT, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MatchS-afes, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a side View of the back attachment of the safe; Fig. 3, a front view of the back attachment, and a back view of the safe; and Fig. 4 represents a top view of the safe, showing the back and front parts.
The object of my invention is to afford the means for easily attaching the friction-paper, and preventing it from being seen when not required for use.
It is well known that the friction surface or paper becomes soiled by use, thereby materially injuring the appearance of the safe. My invention is designed to obviate this objection; and it consists of one or two matchboxes attached to an ornamental board or plate, having a back plate (by which it is hung up for use) connected thereto by hinges, and provided with a convenient means for holding the sand or other friction-surface paper, and for retaining the match-box plate in place when folded against it.
In said drawings, A represents the matchboxes; B, the match-box plate, which is hinged at O to the back plate D. E represents the sand-paper or other equivalent material for the purpose. It is fastened in place by first slipping the upper edge in between the thin strip E, then bending it over the face of D, and passing the lower end F under the jointed strip G, which is then turned on thejoint H into the position shown by the dotted lines G, thereby holding it securely in place.
The match-safe plate B is held in place, when closed, by means of the friction of pin I, and
a short piece of rubber tubing inserted at J,
into which it fits close enough for that purpose when the safe is closed, as shown in Fig. 1.
The safe is held in position when hung up by means of the holes K.
I claim as my invention As an article of manufacture, a match-safe composed of the parts A, B, and D, hinged together at O, and provided with a frictionsurface, E, and holding-strips E and G, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
