UNITED STATES- -PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN V. TULLY, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,650, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed February 14, 1895. Serial No. 538,354. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TULLY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a match-safe which is simple and novel in construction, the safe being designed to hold an advertising device and the receptacle for the matches being so constructed that but a single match can be removed at a time, and in removing the same it will be ignited, the device being intended particularly for use in stores, hotels and other places in which cigars and tobacco are sold.
Vith the above ends in view the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match-safe and advertising device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of' the igniting device. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of an advertising-plate which is adapted to be maintained in position upon the match-safe,
and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the match-box partly removed from its base or support.
A designates a suitable base to which is attached a plate d, the side and front edges of said plate being bent to provide inwardlyprojecting flanges above the plate proper so as to receive the flanges at the lower end of the match-safe B, said match-safe being preferably made up of' sheet metal.
The lower part of the match-safe is constructed to rovide a chamber B,which is open at its rear end, and the part of the safe which contains the matches has an inclined bottom b, which extends beyond the front of the chamber B and is connected by a sharp bend to the front wall of the match-box, thus forming a contracted portion in which the matches rest, the contracted portion being cut away centrally to permit the matches to be manipulated, as hereinafter described. The upper part of the front wall of the match-box may be bent as shown at b to present the appearance of an ornamental molding beyond which the plate extends horizontally to provide a ledge for the attachment of' a hinged cover b2.
The front portion of the match-safe B has suitably attachedthereto or formed therewith projecting flanges c, and parallel with said flanges are flanges c. Between the fianges c and c is adapted to be placed an advertising card or plate O of ornamental appearance,
`the lower central portion of said card or plate being cut away so that -it may be slid between the iianges c and c and held in a vertical position. If the advertising-sheet is made of metal, as tin, the lower edges are bent outwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, to form fee-t.
The sheet C is of any suitable configuration and contains any appropriate advertising matter, and being substantially flat can be printed upon or ornamented in the usual way. The plate C being removable others can be substituted from time to time as the dealer desires.
lf it is not desired to support the safe upon a base, as shown, the side pieces thereof can be provided with hooks B2 by means of which the safe may be suspended.
In a device of this character it is desirable to provide means whereby when the matches are withdrawn it will be for immediate use, and with this end in view the lower part of the match-receptacle is provided with an igniting device consisting of' a guide or passage way d, which is attached to one or both sides thereof. To one side of the passage-way CZ is attached a spring d', the free end of 'which is bent to project within the passage-way so as to engage with the head of the match when it is withdrawn and ignite the same. Through the passage-way d is an opening d2 through which the igniting material of imperfect matches may fall, being removed by contact with the inner end of said passage-way. Should the igniting devicel be applied to only IOO one side of the match-safe the other side may be closed so that the matches can onlybewithdrawn through the igniter, or it may be provided with an opening and a roughened plate c placed adjacent thereto upon which the matches may be ignited.
The matches When put in the receptacle therefor are placed with the heads turned in the direction of the roughened plate c, and are removed one at a time by pushing them through the passage-Way, and by drawing them out quickly they Will be ignited.
The compartment B may be used for stori ng boxes of matches therein.
Having thus described my invention, I do not Wish to be limited to the precise construction of the parts as herein shown, but reserve the right to modify the same within the spirit and scope of my claims.
lVhat l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A match safe havin g an inclined bottom plate l) bent as shown to provide an inclined front Wall, said plate being centrally cut away at its bend and provided at one side with an opening; side pieces attached to the plate l);
a cover b2 hinged to the upper part of the plate; vertical sides secured to the chamber so formed and extending below the same; the sides and top having projecting flanges adapted to receive and retain an advertising card7 substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. A match safe having an inclined bottom plate l) bent as shown to provide an inclined front Wall, said plate being centrally cut away at its bend and provided at one side with an opening; side pieces attached to the plate l); a coverb2 hinged to the upperpart of the plate; vertical sides secured to the chamber so formed, said sides extending below the chamber and with a front Wall B and bottom forming a receptacle B, the parts being organized substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth,
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence ot. two witnesses.
JOHN W. TULLY. Vitnessos:
