MATCH-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,720, dated August 3, 1880.

Application filed May 31, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Tnnononn SoHAFER, of Maroa, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in match-boxes; and it consists in making the box in two parts which are hinged together, one of which parts holds the matches and the other one is provided with two supports for a lighted cigar, which supports fold down out of the way when the two parts of the box are closed together, and which snap up into position by the action of springs as soon as the two parts of the box are opened.

Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box, showing it open. Fig. 3 is a side. view of the box when open, and showing a cigar in position.

This match-box is made in two parts, which are hinged together so as to be readily opened outward. In the part A the matches are kept, and this part is constructed in the usual manner, having simply a spring-catch to hold the cover closed and a spring to force the cover open when it is released from the catch. The other part, B, is not intended to hold matches at all, but is intended for the convenience of the smoker in holding the cigar when he is engaged in reading or in some occupation which may make it necessary to lay aside the cigar for the time being. In this part B are placed the two crescent-shaped holders 0, which are provided with suitable springs D for causing them to rise upward the moment the part A is opened, and a spring, E, for causing the part A, which forms a cover to the part B, to open upward. When the part A is closed down upon the part B the two holders upon which the lighted cigar is placed (No model.)

and the spring E are forced downward out of the way, but as soon as the part A is raised upward these three parts snap up into position again. These two holders are placed in such relation to each other in the box that there is ample space for catching all of the ashes from the cigar in one'end of the box, so that when the cigar is placed upon the holder there will be no danger of the ashes dropping off upon the floor or table. Secured to the side of the match-box A is a piece of sandpaper or other rough material, G, upon which the match may be lighted. This part B is also provided with a spring-catch for holding the two parts closed.

This box is made sufficiently small to be readily carried in thepocket, and is specially intended for those smokers who prefer to lay aside their cigars from time to time while reading, and who do not desire to have the ashes drop on on the table or floor.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A match-box formed of two parts, A B, which are hinged together so as to be opened outward, as shown, the part A being adapted to hold matches and the part B provided with supports 0, to hold a lighted cigar in a horizontal position, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the parts A B, the two supporters 0', adapted to be closed down out of the Way and held by the part A when the box is closed, and which are made to antomatically snap up into position again by means of springs when the two parts of the box are opened, substantially as described.

3. The box B, provided with spring-supporters for supporting the cigar and a space at one end of the box to receive the cigar-ashes, substantially as set forth.
