NoMaaeL J. B. ORIVA. COMBINED BOOK AND PURSE.
No. 575,809. Patented Jan. 26, 1897. y
TOR/1578. I
UNITED STATES PATr.NT OFFICE.
JOHN B. ORIVA, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED BOOK AND PURSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,809, dated January 26, 1897.
Application filed June 19, 1896. Serial No. 596,172. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. ORIVA, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State this character adapted especially for prayerbooks, and which is so constructed as to have its money carrying receptacle normally out of view, whereby a book having the general appearance of an ordinary book is provided, while at the same time it answers all the purposes of a purse.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book, showing the attachment thereto open. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional elevation showing the same closed. Fig. 3 carrying receptacle used in the construction of my device, and Fig. 4. is an inside view of the book having'one of its covers opened and showing a portion thereof broken away.
In the practice of my invention the cover A of any ordinary book A is supplied with a recess a. This said recess is formed by placing a partition A between the two thicknesses a and d forming part of the cover A of the book, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4c of the drawings.
The money carrying receptacle forming part of the invention comprises a sliding compartment B and an extended tongue 13. The said compartment is composed of a plate 1), preferably of leather, and two side walls I) and a front wall 6 These said walls are normally folded over upon the plate I) when the sliding compartment B is located within the recess a of the cover A, as illustrated in is a perspective View of the money-i Fig. 2 of the drawings. The front wall or flap b of the sliding compartment B is normally maintained in an open position by means of a plate-spring O, which said spring comprises two arms, which are respectively attached to the plate I) and the front wall b of the compartment B, whereby when said compartment is drawn out, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the front wall will be thrown upwardly to facilitate the removal of money or any'other contents 1, adapted to be contained within the receptacle. To facilitate the removal or the operation of said receptacle, the front edge of the cover A of the book is provided with a recess a for admission of the thumb and finger.
In the operation of attaching the sliding compartment to the cover the lower end 2 of the flap B will be cemented to the inner surface of the coverA', whereby the sliding compartment or money-receptacle B cannot be entirely removed from the cover A, but it can be drawn out to any desired distance, depending upon the length of the flap B, which said flap will fold over the inner surface of the compartment- B when said compartment is in its closed position.
The use of my device is obvious, as it is simply necessary to place small coins or other money within the compartment B and close the same and the spring 0 will exert sufficient tension to maintain the compartment in a closed position and prevent the accidental removal thereof, while it will at the same time automatically distend the walls thereof when the compartment is drawn out,as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a book having a recess in the cover thereof, of a sliding receptacle for engagement with said recess, said receptacle having a tongue connected therewith which is cemented to the inner surface of the cover, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a book having a recess formed in the cover thereof and a sliding receptacle located within said recess, said re- IOO ceptacle comprising a flat plate having a folded end Wall and folded side walls thereon, and a tongue which is cemented to the inner surface of the cover of a book, and a spring for automatically distending the said Walls, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of June,
JOHN B. ORIVA. Vitn esses:
M. G. MOLEAN,
SCHWARTZ.
