ALPHA H. METCALF, F ATT1A3EB0RO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR( TO THE'BAER & 7 WILDE COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS C UFF BUTTON 'Application mea rebraryflsflsaz. serial No. 593,761.
This invention relates to cui buttons, and the primary object thereof is to rovide a cuil' button which has novel means the ends or heads thereof so that same may be moved into the plane or shank of the body of the button in positioning same, and sub- Sequently moved-to extend at substantially right angles to said shank so as to retain the button in position on the garment, lo A further object of the invention is to provide heads which may be moved to lie on opposite sides of the shank and to further provide a simplified and economical construction involving a minimum of parts l5 which are secured without the use of solder and wherein the heads quickly turned to their different positions .and wherein same are effectively heldin all of such positions. l
In the drawing: 'Y
Figure 1` is a plan view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Figure l, showing the heads turned at right angles in dotted position: Figure 3 is a section online 3`3 of Figure 1; .f
Figure 4 Vis a detail view of the free ends of one of the heads, and l Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig- 80 ure 4.
In proceeding in accordance withthe present invention a shank 1 is employed which may be of any ornamental form desired and as here shown is formed with cups 2 at its ends in which jewels or other ornamental gems or the like may be secured. The shank or body 1 is formed with an axial or longitudinal borein which a rod 4 The bore 4 is bisected by transverse openings in which the ends 5 of the head 6 are journalled. As shown in Figures 4 and 5 the ends 5 of the heads are formed with cruciformed grooves 7 which grooves are of a size to have snapping engagement with the end portions of the rod 4. The rod 4 is held against axial movement by the ,gems at the end portions lof the shank 1, although it will beun Yerstood that thegems can be omitted and-the rod 4 held against axial displace! i0 mentby other means.
or mounting Vaffording a most economical,
can be easily and is disposed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the ends 5' with their cruci-form groove 7' of each head are disposed on opposite'sides of the end portions of the rod 4, consequently the latter forms a common means for latching each of the ends 5 of each of the heads 6, thereby simple and compact structure, involving a minimum of l parts.
Since the heads are preferably formed of wire or other material having springproperties, it will be seen that the ends 5 thereof can be readily sprung into and out of engagement with the rod, and at the same time are effectively held in\latcl'1ed position.
Having thus described my invention what I cla-im a-s new and desire to secure by Letters4 Patent is.
1. In a button, a shank having a longitudinal bore and spaced transverse openings bisectingthe bore, a rod in the bore extending across the openings, and heads each having spaced ends which are journalled in the openings and lie on opposite sides of the rod and have cruci-.forln grooves which are formed to snap into engagement with the rod thereby to latch the heads in different positions. 2. In a button, a shank having a longitudinal bore and spaced transverse openings bisecting the bore, a rod in the bore extending across the openings, and heads each'having spaced ends which are journalled in the openings and lie'on opposite sides of the rod and have groovesV to snap into engagement with the rod thereby to latch the heads in position. v
3. In a button, a body having spaced transverse openings, heads each having spaced ends journalled in theopenings, and means in the body common to each of the heads to engage the ends ofthe heads to latch the heads in posltion. y
4. In a button, a body having spaced transverse openings, heads each having spaced ends journaled i'n the openings, and means independent of and disposed in the bodv to engage the ends of the heads thereby to latch l the latter in position.
5. In a button, a body, spaced heads having spaced ends journalled in the body, and
fhead ends` and engageable with the grooves to latch the heads in position.
lo 7.- In a button, abody, spaced heads havin l 'engageable vWith nthe means independent of and 'carried'bythe body and common to'each ofthe heads to latch same in different positions.
6. In a button, a body, spaced ing spacedends journaled in the body and formed with grooves on their end faces, and: means in the body common to each 'of the spaced ends journaled in the body and forme with lgrooves on their end faces, and means independent of and disposed in the body and heads .in position. l
8. In a button, a body element, and a head element having spaced' ends journaled in the body element, one of said elements having seats and the other element having means independent thereof Ifor snapping engagement with the seats to hold the head element in different positions.l 9. In a button, a
rod-like element in the body extending across the opening and in the space between the head ends for engagement on its opposite sides with the seats of the respective head ends.
10. In a button, a body having a transverse Vope ning,'a head having spaced'ends journaled in the opening and one of which ends ,is providedwith seats, and means independent of the body and carried thereby and eX- tending into the opening for engaging in the seats to hold the head in different positions.
11. In a button,l a body, a head having spaced ends journaledlin opposite sides of the body and each provided' with seats,V and means in the body independent of the latter for snapping into the seatsthereb'y lto hold the head indifferent positions. v
12.111 a button, a body, a, head hating a pair of parts jornaled in the opposite 'sides of the body, and means in the body and inde- ,l
' pendent of the latter for latching one of the ead parts in different positions.
In testimony whereof heads hav- 4grooves to latch the body-having a transverse opening, a head having spaced ends provided Y' `With seats, journaled in the opening, and a v I'have signed my 'name to this specification.
