March 19, 1946. O v ANDERSON 2,396,668
CUFF BUTTCN Filed Dec. 29, 1944 INVENTOR WZZ/ am ATTORN EY Patented Mar. 19,1946
UNITED STATES PATEN T emee CUFF BUTTON Olol' v. Anderson, Providence, a. I. Application December 29, 1944, Serial No. 570,391 6 (cl. 24-102) 1 v 9 Claims. My present invention relates to cut! buttons,
and has particular reference to cull buttons which the movable head is journaled. Still another object of the invention is to pro-' vide a spring latch arrangement for'the movable head which is wholly contained within the movable head. A further object of the invention is to provide vided with a body portion ll, preferably in the form of a bifurcated member having two spaced arms l2 and I3. An ornamental head I I of any desired shape and style is. rigidl secured to the base ii of the body portion, and a movable head Q I 6 is pivotally journaled between the spaced arms l2 and is for selective retention in desired angular relation to the body portion I I.
Each journal arm is preferably shaped as indicated in Fig. 3, wherein the upper portion of the arm I2 is shown as provided with an inner surface I! and beveled edges l8, and the arms l2 and 13 are rigidly connected by a hinge pin l9,
see Fig. .2, which extends through suitable openings in the arms, and is headed over to lock the journal arms together against separating movement;
a cuff button construction of the movable head I type having a smallnumber ofreadily manufactured and assembled parts. I
scribed in thfidetailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing and more specifically thereto.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is an elevation of a cut! button embodying' the novel invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, partsbeing in' section on the line 2-2 01' Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail, partly broken Q away, of one Journal arm;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of-the movable head;
Fig. 5 is a view of a coil spring suitable for mounting in the movable head;
Fig. 6 is a side view, partly broken away, of one of the novel cup washers; and
With the above and other objects and adva'ntageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of. parts morefully de-,
defined in the. claims appended Fig. 'Zis an elevation of the cup washer of h Fig. 6.
.It has been found desirable to construct a can button of the movable head type sothat all the latching mechanism for selectively releasably Referring now to Figs. 4 to 'z, the movable head 1 I8 is preferably of solidconstruction or may be made of stamped sheet metal or other suitable material, and formedrwith a centrally positioned lateral channel 2| which ispreferably of square cross-section. Seated within the channel 2| at each end thereof is a cup-shaped washer 22, see Fig. 7, to seal the ends of the channel 2|;
the washers have suitable openings 23 for accommodating the hinge pin, and are forced apart to engage-the inner surfaces ll of the arms l2 and I3 by means of a coil spring 24 which is preferably mounted concentric with thehinge pin. l9. Each washer is provided with a plurality of spaced pro-- jections or detents 25 on its outer face, the illustrated embodiment utilizing four detents which constitute latch means and are adapted to engage with the beveled sides i8 of the arms [2 and I3, which function as catch means, and to rideover the inner surface ll of the arms against the tension of the. spring 24 when the movable head is turned. a k
The above construction thus .utilizes a very small number of parts. When the movable head I6 is positioned either at right angles to or in the same directionasthe cuff button body, the detents-25 act aslatch members which engage the locking the movable head in difier'ent angular re- 'lations to the cufl. button body is mounted within the movable head. I To this end, I have devised a cull button construction in which the movable head is joumaled-between two fixed journal arms of the cufl? link body,'and has spring pressed latch mechanism mounted within the movable head for selective latching journal-arms.
In the drawing. the novel cuir button I! is prongagement with the fixed beveled sides 18.01 the armsl2 and l3,-which act as catch members, and rigidl hold the movable head in place; When the movable head is manually turned, the detents ride over the beveled sides l8 and the flat inner surface I! of the side arms, compressing the spring 24, whereby the two washers 22 move inwardly until the movable head is turned far enough to permit the detents to again snap into releasable locking engagement with the beveled'sides IS.
'The cum-button th s utilizes a snap action Although I have described a specific constructional embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the size, the shape, the material and the relative mounting of the parts, may be made to suit difierent designs for cufi buttons, without departing from the spirit and the scopev of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a cufi link, a body portion having two spaced arms at one end thereof, a head pivotally journaled between said spaced arms and having spring pressed means engageable with at least one armfor releasably retaining said second head in different selective angular relation to said arm, and a second head secured to the other end of the body portion.
2. In a cuii link, a body portion having two spaced armsat one end thereof, a head pivotally journaled between said spaced arms and having spring pressed means engageable with said arms for releasably retaining said head in diiIerent selective angular relation to' said arms, and a second head secured to the other end of the body portion.
3. In a cufi link, a body portion having two spaced arms, a head pivotally mounted between said spaced arms, and spring pressed latch means comprising a washer having spaced detents mounted in said head and engagable with at least one arm for releasably retaining said head in different selective angular relation to said arm.
4. In a cut! link, a body portion having two spaced arms, a head pivotally mounted between said spaced arms, and spring pressed latch means to said body portion.
,of said arms, said washers having central openings for the hinge pin, and a coil spring mounted on said hinge pin and pressing said cup-shaped washers outwardly.
6. In combination, a body portion having spaced arms, a head pivotally mounted between said arms, and spring pressed latch means mounted in said head engageable with catch means on at least one of said spaced arms for releasably latching the head in selected angular relation to-said body portion.
7. In combination, a body portion having spaced arms, a head pivotally mounted between said arms, and spring pressed latch means comprising an element having detents, said detents being selectively engageable with catch means on at least one of said spaced arms for releasably latching the head in selected angular relation to said body portion. 3
8. In combination, a body portion having spaced arms, a head pivotally mounted between said arms, said head having a channel therethrough, and spring pressed latch elements in said channel selectively engageable with the sides of said arms for releasably latching the head in selected angular relation to said body portion.
9. In combination, a body portion having spaced elements with sides, a head pivotally mounted between said elements, and spring pressed latch means mounted in said head comprising detents selectively engageable with the sides of the body portion elements vfor releasably latching the head in selected angular relation OLOF V.
