This invention relates to match 'packages having a row of matches connecte with a common base strip, from which the matches are torn oil", when they are to be used. In

packages of this type it was already proposed to fold the matchesdown on the base strip, at some distance from their base. The matches may thus be grasped at the fold, when they are to be torn olf from the base strip. 'Ihe match strip thus folded may be provided with a special cover which is attached to the undivided base strip of the matches and is folded around the matches in a manner known in itself. The friction sur- '15 face may be placed on the outer surface of the cover and, by preference, just at the same level as the undivided base strip. In such packages the matches are easily brought into disorder, after a. few matches have been taken from the packages, because the matches then will not guide each other any more. This is particularly so, when the wrapper round the match heads is not secured to the base strip b v means of staples or the like. Consequent- 1y the matches are easily bent in the lateral direction at their fold to lie obliquely in the package having their heads in a dangerous proximity to the striking surfaces. Thus, the matches may be ignited unintentionally '30 and, moreover, it is rather diilicult to draw them out of the package. this invention is to overcome such inconveniences and to effect that the remaining matches are always kept in their correct po- -3' sition in the package, even if the cover is loosely wrapped round the heads of the matches.

A further object of this invention is to sim,- plify the package proper still more by lengthening the base strip so much that it may be folded around the heads of the matches and thus serve as a cover for the matches. Preferably, the base strip is provided at itsinner side with friction surfaces on one side or, on both sides of the row of matches, so that the matches are ignited when they are drawn out between the opposite portions of the base strip, said portions being pressed against the row of matches either by hand-at each occasion of use or by particular means acting The chief object of permanently, for instance, by connecting the folded portion of the base strip, at those edges o said portion, which are parallel to the matches, with the remaining portion of the base strip. u

The match ackage which is made of paper, cardboard or other suitable material is thus extremely simple to manufacture and is very compact. The package is consequently very fit or being placed in ci arette boxes, .o for instance, at the under side the inner box or in a pocket on the outer box.

One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing.

Referring now to the drawin 1 indicates a row of matches formed by making incisions in a strip of paper or cardboard from one side in such manner that the matches are integral with and connected by a common uncut base strip2. In order to facilitate the separation of the matches from the base strip perforations 3 are made at the base of the matches to weaken the matches there. In the finished package the matches are, at some distance from their base, folded towards the base strip 2 along a folding line 4 in such manner that 30 the free ends carrying the heads 5 of the matches will lie close by the centre line of the base strip 2. The folded portion or flap of the matches may be ixed to the non-folded portion by an adhesive applied in the fold in g5 order to prevent the folded portion from se arating from the non-folded portion due to t e resiliency csf/he material at the folding line. The surplu portion 7 of the strip 2 is folded along a folding line 6 to cover the matches 9o serves as a cover for the matches. When the match package is to be applied to a cigarette box consisting of an outer box and an inner box slidable therein the match package is, preferably, attached to the under side of the inner box by means of a wire staple or an adhesive in such manner that the folded, double asted ends A8 of the matches may be sei when the inner box has been partially pushed out. The match package may, however, also be placed in a pocket on the outer box. If the width of such pocket is made equal to the width of the match p y. age, any particular measures need not be taken on the match package to guide the outermost matches, when they are drawn out.

What I claim is: Y 1. In a match package, -a row of matches formed integral w1th a common base strip, the upper head-carrying portions of said matches being at some distance from said base strip folded down on said base strip, and means for attaching together the .portions of said matches folded on each other.
