Patented May 7, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPENSER FOR ROLLED MATERIAL Louis C.- Spaldo, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Waxed Products Company, Inc., Brooklyn, N. Y., a corporation of New York implication June 1'1, 1933, Serial No. 676,255
3 'Claims.
of waxed paper or like material is for wrapping the remainder of the roll at all times within the box and unexposed to any outside influence.
An object of the invention is to provide a box of this nature which can be easily, practically and economically constructed from a single piece of appropriate material.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a box in which two walls which form a passage for the paper web, are entirely separate from and independent of the box cover, .whereby the cover may be moved without displacing the web end and the web may be withdrawn without displacing the cover.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparentas the description proceeds.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the finished box;
Figure 2 is a plan view showing the box blank before being folded into the finished box; and
' Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1,
showing a roll of paper in place within the box and the path followed by the paper when it is withdrawn therefrom.
The box blank A is cut from a single piece of cardboard or similar material, scored for folding on the lines 2 and cut on the lines 3 whereby the several parts may be folded together to form the completed box according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the box, when completed, having a double wall, opposite the wall behind which the cover flap is inserted, forming a passage for the free end of the roll of paper whereby desired lengths thereof can be withdrawn from the box and\severed from the remainder of 'the roll within the box by drawing the paper over a cutting edge attached to one of; these walls without raising the box cover.
Merely for convenience in description the blank shown in Figure 2 may be considered as comprising two integral sections A and A", which are adapted to be folded over upon each other to form the completed box;
The section of the blank marked A is scored horizontally to define cover 4, cover flap 5 and one rear wall 6, and vertically to define the ends 5 I and 9., The ends! and 9 are in their turn scored horizontally to define the flaps I and 9'.
The end 9 integrally joins the sections A and A", and specifically joins the rear wall 6 and end 'I of the section marked A, with the front wall 9 10 and end wall I 0 of the section marked A", whereby the end wall III, front wall 9, end 9, rear wall 6 and end I are in exact alignment with each other, and can be folded together as will be hereinafter explained.
r The horizontal scoring of the section marked A" defines the front wall 9, bottom II, and rear wall I4, while the vertical scoring defines the end flap III, flaps I2, I2, provided with tongues I3, I3 and the flapsl5, I5.
A slit I6 is provided in the end wall 8 and a similar slit II in the end wall I0 for receiving the tongues I3, I3.
The flaps I, 9', may, and preferably will, have portions of their short ends cut away, as shown 25 in Figure 2, so that they will not abut against the sides of the box when the latter is in use.
It is also preferable to make the wall 6 somewhat narrower than the ends I and 8, front 9, and flap III, for a reason which will be hereinafter explained. Y
The box may be assembled in any convenient manner as for example the several parts may be folded on the scored lines 2 and the sections- A' and A folded together with the outer face of the end flap I against the inner face of the end flap l0, and the two end flaps fastened securely to each other by stapling or in any other suitable manner. The flaps I2, I2 may then'be folded up from the bottom and the flaps I5 and I5, and 40 rear wall I4 folded so that they lie in the same plane whereupon a cutter 20, preferably, but not necessarily, having a serrated edge and preferably, but not necessarily, made of heavy fibrousmaterial, may be attached in any suitable manner to the free edge of the wall I4, and this attaching may, if desired, but need not necessarily, take place in the same operation as the attaching of the flaps I5, l5"just referred to, so that the flaps are securely fastened between the cutter and the rear wall. This attachment may be effected by staples 22 or other suitable means. The tongues I3, I9 may now be inserted in the slits I 6, I1; and the box is then ready to receive the roll of paper, the leading end of which is placed in.
the passage formed between the rear walls 6 and H. The flaps I, 8' of ends I and I may now be folded within the box and the cover flap folded down and inserted between the flaps l, I and the front wall 9 to close the box.
The roll of paper to be dispensed lies within the box and the free end of the web 2| passes underneath the wall 8, which as previously pointed out, is not quite as deep as the front wall 9, then up between the wall 6 and the wall it to the edge of the cutter 20. Under ordinary circumstances the end of the web will not then withdraw into the box but will remain thus positioned due to the pressure of the lower end of the rear wall 6 and the narrowness of the passage between the walls 6 and M. For greater convenience of the user in grasping the free end of the web for successive withdrawals of paper tab 88 may be severed from the box on the perforated line l9 thus forming an opening through which a thumb or finger may be inserted to frictlonally engage the free end of the web by pressure against the inside of the wall It to advance the web beyond the knife edge when it may be grasped between thumb and finger.
The invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A box blank for folding into a box for dispensing rolled material, scored vertically to define an end wall, a front wall, a second end wall, a rear wall and a third end walL'all in alignment and scored horizontally to define, adjacent the rear wall, a top or cover section, and a cover flap for the box, and, adjacent the front wall, a bottom member and a supplemental rear wall member, one of said last mentioned members being scored vertically to define extensions thereto, and the other being cut vertically in alignment with the scoring on the first said member as far as the horizontal scoring separating said members from each other, said first mentioned rear well being of slightly less depth than said supplemental rear wall member, slits in said end walls, and tongues on said extensions adapted to fit into said slits.
2. Box for dispensing waxed paper or the like from a roll, having front, rear and three end wall members, all formed in alignment and folded over with the third end wall member lying adjacent and fastened securely to the first end wall member with the second end wall between said front and rear walls, so as to form .a partial box body having front, rear and end walls, a cover member hinged to said rear wall, a. depending longitudinal flap hinged to said cover member and adapted to fit within the front wall to form a cover for the box, a bottom member connected throughout its length to said front wall, a supplemental rear wall member connected throughout its length to said bottom member, tongue-flap extensions on one of the last named members, and means for attaching said tongue flap extensions to the ends to complete the box, the space between the main and supplemental rear walls constituting a passage for a web of paper, and means adjacent I the opening of said passage for severing a length of paper from the roll.
3. Box-for dispensing waxed paper or the like having front, rear and three end wall members all formed in alignment and folded over with the third end wall member lying adjacent and fastened securely to the first end wall member with the second end wall between said front and rear walls, so as to form a partial box body having front, rear and end walls, a cover member hinged to said rear wall, a depending longitudinal flap hinged to said cover member and adapted to fit within the front wall to form a cover for the box, a bottom member connected throughout its length to said front wall, flaps upstanding from said bottom member, said flaps carrying tongues adapted to fit into slits in said end walls, a supplemental rear wall connected throughout its length to said bottom and means for maintaining said supplemental rear wall in upstanding position with its inner face slightly spaced from the outer face of the main rear wall to complete the box, the space between the main and supplemental rear walls constituting a passage for a web of paper, and means adjacent the opening of said passage for severing a length of paper from the roll.
