FOLDING WRAPPER.

Application filed May 18, 1927. Serial No. 190,980.

This invention relates to folding wrappers for garments and the like articles.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved folding wrapper of the character described adapted to have a dress or similar garment laid out therein and so positioned when folded within as to be prevented from movement and thus practically eliminate creasing or crumpling of the garment.

Another object of the invention is to provide a wrapper of the character described made of a blank of sheet material so formed as to facilitate enclosing the garment simultaneously with the foldmg of the blank into a flat, compact package.

A further object of the invention is to provide a wrapper of the character described of improved, simplified construction which 10 is cheap to manufacture, may be readily formed into a package from a blank, and practical and efiicient to a high degree in use. I

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 1() denotes a folding wrapper embodying the invention, which is here shown preferably in use for packing a dress D, but may be utilized for packing various other garments,

wearing apparel or articles that can be conveniently folded. Said wrapper 10 is preferably constructed from a single blank B of sheet material such as cardboard, fibreboard, corrugated paper or the like of light or heavy weight stock, cut, creased and adapted to be folded to form a fiat compact package such as shown in Fig. 5. To this ,end the blank B is accordingly provided with single and double creases, as will heresections 11 and 12 are provided with means for engaging the dress, said means being effective to retain the dress against move ment so that creasing and crumpling of the garment in the package is eliminated. To this end, a head flap 15 is rovided which extends from the body section 11 and divided therefrom by creases 19. Said flap 15 has a plurality of suitable tongues 16 preferably cut therefrom as by slitting the 'flap as at 17. These tongues 16 extend inwardly away from the free edge 18 of said flap 15 and terminate close to the creases 19. Thus the shoulder portion of the dress can be readily inserted beneath the tongues 16 as shown in Fig. 2 after which the fla 15 and overlying dress portion may be f0 ded atthe creases 19 over the body section 11 as shown in Fig. 3. The tongues 16 thus insure the retention of the shoulder portion of the dress D during the packing operation and when the dress is in packed condition.

The body section 11 has side flaps20 extending from the longitudinal sides thereof adapted to be infolded over the dress D and over the head flap 15, said flaps being dividedfrom the body section 11.by longitudinally extending parallel creases 22 which form the narrow sidewalls 21 between them. These flaps 20 are easily foldable over the side portions of the dress and hold the same against lateral shifting. Extending from the longitudinal sides of the cover section 12 are closure flaps 2 1 which after the body section 11 has been folded over at the creases 11 14 are folded over and around the body section 11 as shown in Fig. 4, thus securing the cover and body sections together. The closure flaps 24 are divided from the cover section 12 by spaced longitudinally extending creases 23 between which extend the side walls 25. The walls 25 are preferably made wider than the walls 21 so that the former may freely overlie the latter and to allow room for the thickness of the material embraced by the cover section 12 and flaps 24. Extending from the end of the cover section 12, there is provided a closure flap 27 divided from said section 12' by transversely extending parallelly spaced creases 29 which form the end wall 28 of the package between said creases. Said closure flap 27 is preferably folded over the side flaps 24 and suitable securing means such as a string 30 secured to the exterior side of the flap 27 as by means of the eyelet rivet 31. Said string may be wound around the box when formed and the end releasably secured about a circular tab 32 fixed to the body section 11 as is clearly shown in Fig. 5.

From the above description'and drawing, it is apparent that a neat compact wrapper is provided forming a package which is adapted to retain apparel packed therein without permitting, the same to become creased or crumpled. Furthermore, the improved construction of the wrapper facilitates the insertion of the dress therein.

It will be noted that'when the side flaps 20 extending from the body section 11 and.

the head flap 15 are infolded over the upper portion of the garment in the manner above described, said garment portion is held securely in place indeppndently of the cover section as shown in 3. The body section may then be folded down a ainst the cover section without in anyway isturbing creasing or crumpling the upper portion of the garment, and the flaps 24 of the cover section and the closure flap 27 all folded in position to not only enclose and retain the lower portion of the garment in spread position but also form a secondary wrapping closure for .the upper portion. Also, the lower edges 20 of the flaps 20 bear against Y the garment at about the foldedmid-portion thereof, and this helps keep the upper and lower of the 'arment portions from lateral movement or eing displaced from their spread position.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. i

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth orshown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

A blank for forming a wrapper of the character described divided by a transverse crease into a pair of sections, a foldin flap outwardly extending from one of said sechavin a slit therein forming an inwardly exten ing tongue, said blank divided by longitudinal creases closely spaced to provide side walls and flaps on at least one of said sections, a folding closure flap extending outwardly from the other of said sections opposite said folding flap, and means portion of a garment against said first mentioned section, and a closure flap extending from they other section foldable to overlie the first mentioned section to form a package.

5.- A wrapper adapted to receive a garment comprising a pair of sections, a flap foldably extending from one of said sections opposite the other section, said fla having means to engage an end portion 0 the garment for retaining the latter in position to overlie another garment portion spread on ,tions opposite to the other section, said flap the adjoining section when said fla is infolded, the other of said sections with still another portion of the garment spread thereon being foldable to overlie the first mentioned section and flap.

6. A wrapper adapted to receive a garment comprising a pair of sections, a flap foldably extending from one of said sections opposite the other section, said flap having 10 means to engage an end portion of the garment for retaining the latter in position to overlie another garment portion spread on the adjoining section when said flap is infolded, the other of said sections with still another portion of the garment spread thereon being foldable to overlie the first mentioned section and flap, and a closure flap extending from the last mentioned section.
