Description

CYLINDER HEAD FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed Dec. 26, 1950 bk/ENTER A WK/M Patented Jan. 12, 1932 HANS srnmna, or wnvrnarnun, SWITZERLAND,-:IASSIQNOR;TO FIRM or sepia-m rRnREs socrnrn AnoNYME, on wi'nrnn'rmm, SWITZERLAND CYLINDER HEAD FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Application filed December 26, 1930, Serial 110,504,688, and in Switzerland May 26, 1930.
This invention relates tocylinder heads or covers for internal combustion engines, and more particularly for double-actingengines, of the kind in which the head or cover is provided with a central opening which is surrounded by an annular water chamber and accommodates for example a piston rod, and with one or more other openings or sockets for valves, the cylinder head or cover being clamped to the cylinder by a clamping ring through holes in which pass retaining bolts connecting the ring to the cylinder.
In existing cylinder heads of this kind, since the clamping ring lies partly withinthe ring of retaining bolts, the diameter of the outer circumferential wall of the cylinder head which is surrounded by the clamping ring is limited, with the result that the walls of the sockets for the valves, which, owing to the central opening, are of necessity each arranged eccentrically with respect to the cylinder axis, pass into the outer circumferential wall of the cylinder head throughout their length so that the cooling water space canas not completely surround these sockets and itis thus impossible to obtain adequate cooling thereof.
A cylinder head according to the present invention for an internal combustion engine of the kind referred to above comprises in combination with the clamping ring through which pass the retaining bolts, a water-cooled cylinder head or cover having an annular water chamber a part of the outer circumferential wall of which remote from the cylinder is surrounded by the clamping ring while a part adjacent to the cylinder is of larger diameter soas to lie adjacent to the retaining bolts and form a shoulder on which the clamping ring bears, this enlarged part of the circumferential wall ofv the annular water chamber being provided with a radially projecting portion extending between the Y retaining bolts adjacent to each valve socket so as to increase the water space around the sockets. 7
One construction according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section on the line I-I of" Figure 2, and v Figure 2 is a section on the line 11-11 of Figure 1. i V In the construction illustrated the cylinder head comprises a body portion a provided with an opening I) for a piston rod and with sockets 0 for fuel injection valves which pass through the annular water cooling chamber cl surrounding the central opening 7).
A clamping ring 6, through which pass securing bolts 7', is provided for clamping the cylinder head a to the cylinder and, according to this invention, the clamping ring surrounds only a part of the cylinder head a lying remote from the cylinder. The outer circumferential wall of the part of the cylinder head a which lies adjacent to the cylinder is of larger diameter than that surrounded by the clamping ring 6 so that it lies adjacent to the retaining bolts f and forms a shoulder on which bears the clamping ring. Further, this enlarged part of the circumferential wall of the cylinder head a is provided with protruding portions in the neighborhood of each of the valve sockets 0 so as to increasethe width of the cooling chamber around these sockets.
Water isdelivered to the cooling chamber cl through a pipe 9 the outlet end of which is conveniently bent so that the water is delivered substantially tangentially with re spect to the cooling chamber so as to cause the water in this chamber to circulate in the direction of the arrows and thus increase its cooling action.
I claim: i
'In an internal combustion engine the combination with a clamping ring with holes for introducing retaining bolts, of a water-cooled cylinder head having an annular water chamher a part of the circumferential Wall of which remote from the cylinder being surrounded by the clamping ring While a part of this Wall adjacent to the cylinder being enlarged in diameter so as to lie adjacent to the retaining bolts and form a shoulder on which the retaining ring bears, this enlarged part of the circumferential Wall being provided with a protruding portion extending between the retaining bolts adjacent to each valve socket so as to increase the water space around such sockets.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
HANS STEINER.
