Description
0. .J. MOEHLER SUPPORT MEANS Nov. 17, 1931.
Filed April 1, i927 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OTTO J. MOEHLER, OF NEWARK, JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'IO GENERAL ELECTRIC VAPOR LAMP COMPANY, OF, HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF 'NEW JERSEY SUPPORT MELANS Application filed April 1,
The present invention relates to supporting means which are movable and which are adapted for variation in lateral dimensions to suit loads of various heights or loads having a center of gravity at different heights and at different lateral distances from the center of the support.
Various objects and advantages of the invention will be obvious from the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying the invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawings; and the invention also consists in certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed. r
In the accompanying drawings there is shown for purposes of illustration one form of mechanism embodying the invention, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation view showing an embodiment of the invention in the form of a portable support platform adapted to receive a cooperating extension member for increasing the distance between rollers under the support.
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the support member of Fig. 1 together with an extension member mounted thereto. 7
Fig. 3 is an elevation view'of the parts shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is an elevation view showing the support means of the invention used to carry a mercury vapor arc lamp and auxiliary apparatus therefor.
In the drawings, with particular reference to Fig. 1, the base member 1 carries at each side thereof the outwardly extending pedal 2, to which is removably attached. a swivelled roller or caster 4, the attaching means comprising a plate 6 carried by each of said rollers having a set of holes 8, 8 and bolts 10, 10 which pass therethrough and through corresponding holes 12, 12 in said pedals 2, 2. Centrallyof said base 1 is provided a standard 14: to which is mounted the mercury vapor lamp 16 which is adjustably movable vertically thereon. Auxiliary apparatus 18 for said. lamp 16 is carried on said base 1.
Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 3 there 1927. Serial no. 180,165.
is shown the frame 20 mounted about said base 1 and attached thereto by bolts 10, 10 at the holes 12, 12. Extending laterally from said frame 20 are the pedals 22, 22 to which are attached the rollers or casters 4, 4 which can be those used on the pedals 2,2 of the base 1 in Fig. 1. The use of the frame 20 to extend the distance between the supporting rollers 4, 'is particularly useful in connection with standard support outfits which are designed to carry different loads which extend to different heights, or extend laterally to different distances, or which are adjustable vertically or laterally. The support of the invention has been illustrated in connection with a mercury vapor arc lamp outfit which is especially designed for use in photographic studios and which consists of one or more lamps with which are used auxiliary apparatus units which extend vertically from the base 1 to the height of about two-and a half to three feet, one auxiliary unit being supplied for each lamp. The lamps on these stands are in some cases used at a distance of two to four feet from the floor and in others at other heights up to seven or eight feet, or more. In'some cases the lamps are adjusted vertically on the standard to serve particular needs. These lamp outfits are portable and as described are mounted on rollers and for that reason it is necessary to provide bases of suitable lateral dimensions to prevent overturning of the outfits during handling and to facilitate the use thereof in places ingly the adjustable base member of the in- .vention has been provided as being found suitable to meet the demands of an adjustable base which can be turned out with standard lamp outfits. V
While I have shown and described and have pointed out in the annexed claims certain novel features of the invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes inthe forms'and details of" I claim l 1. A portable support for supporting a load and adapted to be increased and reduced in area to conform to various loads comprising a base member, means for attaching rollers under said base member, a frame about said base member, means on said frame for cooperating with said attaching .means .on said base member for detachably attaching said frame to said base member, and means on said frame for attaching supporting rollers.
'22. A portable support for supporting a load andadapted to be increased and reduced in area to conform to various loads comprising a base member, means adapted to the attaching of rollers undersaid base member, a frame about said base member, means on said frame-for cooperating withsaid attachi112 means ion said base vmember for detach- :ably attaching said frame to said base member, -.and gmeans-on said :frameadapted to the attaching ofrsupporting rollers, andsupporting rollers attached to said support vat said second attaching means.
3. A {support member having rollers or ,easters thereunder and adapted to be inroreased and decreased in arearto change the distance apart .-of the supporting rollers or vcastersito accommodate different loads and particularly loads havingcenters of gravity at different heights, comprising, abase member, means thereon :for support-ingrollers .or casters, a frame extending about said base .member and having [means for attaching-it to the supporting means on said base "membar, and roller or caster V-attaching :means :on said iframeat distances apart 'greaterthan the distance between the rollerior ,casterattaohing -means on said base member.
4. A support :member having rollers or casters thereunder and adapted to be ;in-
