Description
May 26, 1931. r ER CONTAINER Filed May 10, 1929 1.9 l wlj Patented May 26, 1931 UNITED STATES LEOPOLD LECI-INER, on MAHR-OSTRAU, czEcHosLovAKIA CONTAINER Application filed May 10, 1929, Serial No. 361,931, and in Czechoslovakia May 5, 1928.
Containers provided with opening devices for facilitating the opening of such containers are already well known. These opening devices, however, have the disadvantage that they must be riveted to the container and this riveting is never sufficiently tight to prevent the admission of air to the contents of the container. The contents of the container, therefore, gradually become dry when stored.
Other covers of containers, which are only fitted over the rim of the container and are not permanently secured thereto, are easily lost.
The present invention avoids these disadvantages; for this purpose the rim of the container, or the cover thereof, is bent over in the form of a ring which serves for the attacl ment of the opening device.
Two examples, showing how my invention may be carried into effect, are illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanylng drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows the open container, together with the opening device in side elevation, partly in section,
Figure 2 shows an elevation of the c0nta1ner, with the opening device in side elevatlon,
Figure 3 shows a side elevation, partly in section, of another form of construction of the container, in open position,
Figure 4 is a section on the line a-b of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a plan view of the container, partly in section, on the line c-0Z of Figure 3,
Figures 6 and 7 are detail views showing the opening device infront elevation and plan, respectively, and
Figure 8 is an elevation of the closed container with opening device.
According to the present invention the rim of the container 1 is not cut ofi:' in the usual way so as to form a sharp edge, but is downwardly curved so as to form' a ring 2 over which the cover 3 can be tightly fitted. The
In both cases the projecting portion of the ring 2 or the lug 6 has the opening device 7 secured thereto. It is thus evident that this attachment is not made to a part of the container which comes into contact with the contents thereof, and that air, therefore, cannot enter the interior of the container to reach the contents thereof and cause them to dry. The container is also considerably strengthened by the downwardly curved ring 2; weaker sheet metal than hitherto can, therefore, be used for the manufacture of such containers without impairing the usefulness of such thinner containers.
A particularly suitable opening device for the container, forming the subject matter of the present invention, consists of a flat plate 8 of the shape shown in Figures 6 and 7. This is secured to the downwardly curved ring 2, or its lug 6, by means of tongues 10, 11, 12, which are fitted into holes 13, 14, 15 of the ring 2, or lug 6, and then bent at right angles on the rear side in such a manner that the outer tongues 10, 12 are bent downwardly and v the central tongue 11 upwardly, or vice versa.
The holes 13,14, 15 are of such a shape that it is possible to turn the plate 8 in one r direction or the other, that is to say clockwise, or vice versa, the end holes 13, 15 serving as guides during this turning movement. A W-shaped spring 9, the terminal of which bear against the outer tongues 10 and 12, urges the plate 8 into the original position. When turning the plate 8 by hand, the part thereof which is moved upwardly will bear against the rim 5 of the cover 3 and thus raise the same (Figure 1). This opening device may,,however, be replaced by any one or more of such other opening devices, which are secured to the ring 2 and it is only necessary for them to lift the cover. The downwardly curved portion 2 may not only be provided on the container, but may be located on the cover 3 by analogously bending over the ring 4.
In these cases the part of the container 1 and of the cover 3, in so far as they come into contact with the contents, remain entirely unaltered, and encase the contents in an air-tight manner whereby the drying out of the contents, even when stored for a long time, is avoided.
What I claim is:
The combination of a container and a top therefor, said container having an annular depending lip spaced. therefrom, said lip having, aTJlurality of bearing slots formed there in, a lid or top opener provided with a plurality of tongues operable in said slots to pivot said opener and to limit the movement thereof, and a spring tensioning member engageable with said tongues to tension the movement of said opener.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEOPOLD LECHNER.
