To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER C. DRYs- DALE, a citizen of the United States, residing I is to provide a device of the character stated of simple construction and operation which may be produced at small cost. A further object is to provide opening means which may be readily applied to containers of standard construction in which the top or closure member is secured in the body of the container frictionallyu A further object is to provide a container having a depending flange and .a cover member having an integral shoulder or sleeve member engaging frictionally with the flange to secure the cover in position, the cover being further provided with an outer annular flange, the sleeve of the cover and the flange of the body of the container being so related that, when the cover is in operative position, the annular flange of the cover will be spaced from the top of the container so as to permit the insertion of a key or the equivalent for raising the cover. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings 2- Figure 1 is a side view of a container withan opening means constructed in accordance with my invention applied;
Fig. 2 is a similar view partly broken away to show the construction of'the cover and the upper portion of the container body;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View showing the'opening key in normal posi- Specification of Letters Patent.

downward and inward to provide, in effect, an inverted frusto-conical receiving sleeve or socket. The cover 3 is formed from sheet metal and is bent or crimped to provide the outer annular flange t and the depending integral sleeve 5 corresponding in size and shape to the interior of the socket formed by flange 2. Sleeve 5 is somewhat broader than flange 2 so that, when the cover is forced downward into operative position so as to bring the sleeve 5 and flange 2 into tight frictional engagement thus securing the cover within the container so as to effect a fluid tight closure therewith, the under faceof theannular flange at of the cover will be spaced a short distance above the outer face of the annular shoulder 6 of the top of the container. This forms an annular channel 7 between the flange 4 of the cover and shoulder 6 of the top of the container.
Channel 7 is adapted to receive the stem 8 of 'a key 9. This key is provided, at its inner end, with an integral finger 1O disposed at a right angle to the stem of the key and normally positioned in the plane of channel 7 so as to be contained therein. This key is rotatably supported in a standard or block 11 secured to the outer face of container 1 and extending 'asuitable distance above the same. The key is provided of 90 so as to lift the cover by bringing finger 10 into engagement with the annular flange 4,: as in Fig. 4 of the drawings. When the cover has thus been raised so as to be out of engagement with flange? it may be readily removed from the container, as will be obvious. When it is desired to again close the container the key may be returned to its initial position and the cover rein- I serted into the flange 2. By thus mounting the cover in the container body so as to maintain the annular flange 4 in spaced relation to the top of the container ready insertion of a suitable instrument between the body and. cover, such as the key shown and described, is permitted. In using this device a cover and container of standard construction may be used, the only requirement being that the sleeve of the cover shall be of such greater width than the receiving flange of the body of the container, or these members shall be so related, that the annular flange of the cover will be spacedabove the top of the body of the container when the 5 cover is in operative position.
What is claimed is y The combination with a container having an inner annular shoulder at its upper end, of a cover frictionally secured in the upper 13 end of said container and provided with a horizontal outwardly extending annular flange disposed in parallel spaced relation to the shoulder of the container, a standard secured on the container, and. a horizontally disposed key rotatably mounted in said standard, said hey extending between the top of the container and the annular flange of the cover and being provided at its inner end with an angularly disposed finger, said key being also provided on its outer end with anintegral gripping head disposed at right angles to said finger.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
