The present invention relatesin general to self-opening containers and 1s particularly adaptable as a preferred embodimentin connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment there- Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of a contalner present invention with parts broken away;

The opening device comprises a lever 16 ivoted at 17 on a split rivet 18, the latter having s aced .ends 19' which 'are driven through t e wall of the flange 15 of the covor 14 and are then bent back or clinched with a finger lu 23 (Figs.
Opening of the container is obtained by movement of the lever 16, effected by a lifting action on its lug 22, this resulting in apartial rotation about its pivot 17 during which time its cam surface 23 engages the head 12 of the body (Fig. 3) and moves the cover up from the body thus prying these members apart.
The split construction of the rivet 18 makes .it possible to dispense with all previously formed openings in the cover 14 which in the past have been a source of trouble in that variations between the rivet and such openings tended to impair the tightness of the closed container.
The improved type of rivet of the present invention, on the other hand, provides no path of air leakage, since the ends 19 are driven through the Wall of the flange 15 forming their'own openings, which operation is made possible'by the solid construction of the rivet. The only inetal of the wall that is disturbed in this action is the small amount necessary to permit passage of the ends 19 of the rivet therethrough and the section of metal displaced is of the same size and shape as the rivet parts inserted therein.
The clinching of the ends of the rivet which follows provides a further assurance against leakage and tightly closes all openings in the cover. This provides an improved type of opener associated with a container which will retain the contents in much better condition by reason of the fact that air is not allowed to enter.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof. v claim:
A container of the usual thin sheet metal having a body member, a slip cover memberhaving a flange which frictionally engages around said body, an opening device pivoted on one ofsaid members and arranged to be. turned so as to bear against the other of said ,members to press them apart and open the container,rand a pivot for said opening device having a head, and a fixed bearing por- I tion on WhlCh the opening device is rotatably mounted and two ends spaced apart and extending from the margin of said earing portion and extending through spaced perforations in the oontalner member on which the opening device is pivoted and clinched on the inner face of the container member, whereby the pivot, with the opening device arranged on its bearing portion, may be applied to its container mem er by a driving and bending operation and secured at spaced places to the same.
