This invention relates to a container en-- circling band provided with offsets for spacing the container from a support and other containers.

5 The chief object (if this invention is to provide a relatively cheap but satisfactory spacer construction for containers which must be provided with ventilation such as chick boxes and containers or similar perish- The chief feature of the invention consists in providing a peripherally enveloping band for a container with a plurality of ofi'sets for spacing the container from its support and the adjacent surrounding containers.

- Another feature of the invention consists in providing the band with portions which prevent the band from slipping from the container when mounted thereon.

The full nature of the invention will be able for the shipping of chicks and other small fowl and animals. In making shipmentsof this character from a hatchery, frequently a considerable collection of cartons are handled in one shipment and these are 40 usually stacked oneupon the other and side by side. To prevent suffocation, it is, there? fore, necessary to provide suitabl'spacers or a spacing construction so that the severalcontainers willnot immediately abut each other. I Y

The present invention provides a double function. First, it serves as a band for securely holding the cover and base 'of the carton in containersforming position and second, it provides a'spacing construction for maintaining the carton in spaced relation with adjacent cartons and prevents imme-, diate abuttable engagement therewith.

Peripherally enveloping the carton 10 is a metal strap'12 which throughout its length is provided with a plurality of offsets 13, in spaccdrelation. -These offsets constitute legs, feet or spacers, as the case may be and the band is so fashioned or provided withthese spacers so that preferably not less than two offsets in spaced relation areprovided upon each side of the carton. Herein two bands are illustrated, each positioned near the end of the carton and substantially enveloping the same ,as before mentioned. The

ends of the band are'each turned back as at 14 upon the adjacent portion of the band.,

Connecting the turned or reversely bent ends is a rectangular loop 15.

To prevent lateral displacement of the band relative to the boxor container, there is struck from the band a suitable number of barbs 16 which are adapted to be driveninto the box or container and thus anchor the band against the aforesaid lateral displacement. 4

The invention claimed is:

1.1 A relatively rigid band of metal for peripherally enveloping a polygonal carton and having substantially the same width throughout its length including a plurality of substantially U-sh'aped offsets arranged in spaced relation, a plurality of said ofi'sets projecting laterally from each face. of the 1 container, and a longitudinal corrugation coextensive with the band and extending through the offsets for reinforcing the band and offsets.

2. A device as defined by claim 1 characterized by said band intermediate the off sets including an integral and inwardly directed barb for container anchorage and.- band retention.

3. A device as defined by claim 1 characterized by the oflsets, each having a width in transverse section substantially equal to the width of the band.

4. In combination a plurality of juxtapositioned cartons each including a peripherally enveloping carton securin band, the band of one carton including 0 sets enageable by another of the cartons for spaclng said cartons, the ofi'sets in the adjacent bands of adjacent cartons being complementarily arranged whereby the juxtapositioned adjacent cartons may be accurately aligned with each other without partial staggering when the bands are aligned.
