To all whom it may concern."
e it known that I, Aucus'r J. LUEDKE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Troughs and Methods of Producing the Same, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in troughs and the method of producing the same, and has for its primary object to provide a sanitary hog trough stamped from sheet material and formed at its corners with solderless joints.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hog trough shaped to fit the snout of a hog, and which is divided into sectionsby means of cross braces which also serve to strengthen the structure.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sanitary hog trough capable of being made in varying lengths, and so supported as to be practically untiltable.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sanitary hog trough which is so constructed as to permit nesting of a series of troughs for convenience in shipping.
A further object of this invention resides in the method hereinafter described of stamping hog troughs from sheet material whereby the cost of production is cut to a large extent. 1
With the above andother objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the present invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that such changes in the precise em bodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as comewithin the scope of the claims. a r
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, in which: a 1

Referring now particularly to the drawing, 6 designates a blank form of substantially rectangular shape and struck from a single sheet of material and intermediately provided with a series of bend lines 7, having extending from each corner of the rectangle defined by said bend lines a series of completed fold lines 8, the lines of each adjacent series 1 of said fold lines being outwardly diverged with respect to each other. The blank 6 is bent onits bend lines 7 and folded on lines 8 todefine the rectangular bottom portion 9 and the side walls .10. the outermost fold lines of each series being brought into engagement to form the corners of the trough and the fold ofthe portion of the blank intermediate the said outer lines being bent inwardly and engaging with the end walls of the trough as at 11.
Each wall portion 10 has a bend line 12 adjacent to and parallel to its outer edge to define an edge flange 13, said flange being I bent laterally withrespect t0 the side wall portions. Each edge flange 13 is provided with a fold line 14 parallel to its longitudinal edge, and the portion 15 of the edge flange outwardly of its fold-line 14 is bent inwardly into engagement with the portion of edge flange 13 as depicted in Fig. 5. l
The opposite ends of the side flanges 13 are provided with projectingtabs 16 for forming an interlocking means between the adjacent flange ends. The tabs 16 formed on the flanges of the end side walls are adapted to be engaged between the flange 13 and the portion 15 of the side wall portions as depicted by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the tabs 16 Of the side wal flanges being I verse braces 17-having their ends secured to the narrow flanges by means of suitable fastenings' :18, v The trough is substantially supported by means of'a series" of substantially. U-shaped supports 19, having their I intermediate portion bowed inwardly, as at 20, for engagement" with the bottom of the trough, and having the free ends 21 of the arms ofthe supports bent laterally and secured to theunderside of the flanges-13 by means of fastenings 22. This form of support prevents-the tipping over of the trough, as well as providing a substantial support therefor. v
The method of constructing the sanitary hog trough from a single sheet of material, as hereinbefore described, produces a trough of substantial construction and provided with solderless joints'at the intersection of the side walls, and inv addition to its numerou's advantages, its cheapness in construction, its strength and durability, the troughs are capable of easy shipment in that the cross braces 17 andthe supports l9'may be detached and a number of the troughs nested, as depicted in Fi 5, and the braces and supports placed in the uppermost trough a'swill be readily understood. Vhat I claim as my invention is: l. Asan article of manufacture, a trough formedfrom' a sheet of bendable material and comprising a bottomportion defined by bend lines, side wall portions formed by providing a plurality of series of fold lines extending outwardly from the bend lines, the
outer lines of each adjacent series of said fold lines being outwardly diverged with respect to each other, each of said side wall portions having a bendline adjacent each outer edge, the portion of the sheet of material outwardly of each of said last mentioned bend lines forming edge flanges, and the opposite ends oi each of said edge flanges 'having'interlocking retaining tabs.
2. As an article of manufacture, a receptacle formed from a one piece blank ol't bendable sheet material and having a rectangular bottom portion, side and end walls projecting therefrom, folded acute angular portions connecting the adjacent end edges of the side and end walls and providing solderless joints therebetween, laterally directed flange portions formed at the upper edges of the side and end walls, and tab portions formed at the ends of the flange portions and providing interlocking connections between the adjacent end edges of the side and end walls.
4. As an article of manufacture, a receptacle formed from a blank of bendable sheet material and having a bottom portion, side and end'walls projecting therefrom and having their adjacent end edges meeting, folded connecting portions at the meeting edges of the side and end walls and integral therewith to provide water-tight solderless joints therebetween, a laterally directed flange formed on the upper edge of each side and end wall, and a tab portion formed on each end of said flanges and providinginterlocking connections between the side and end walls.
5. As an article of manufacture, a receptaole formed from a single sheet of material and having a bottom portion, side and end wall portions projecting therefrom, connecting portions between the adjacent end edges of the side and end wall portions, said connecting portions providing water-tight solderless joints between the end edges of the side and end wall portions, and tab portions formed onthe upper end edges of said wall portions, the adjacent tab portions being interlocked to provide securing means bonnecting the adjacent end edges of the side andend walls.
6. The herein described method of manufacturing solderless receptacles from bendable sheet metal which consists in providing a substantially rectangular shaped blank, then providing a series of angular notched portions at each corner of the blank, then providing a series of inwardly converging fold lines extending from each notched portion, then providing bend lines connecting the inner ends of each series of fold lines, then providing securing tongues at the notched portions, then bending and folding the blank on the bend and fold lines, and then interlocking the securing tongues.
7. The herein described method of manufacturing solderless joint receptacles from sheet material, which consists in pmvidin g a substantially rectangular shapedblank, and providing a series of angular notched portions at the corners of the blank, then providing a series of fold lines leading from the notched portions, the lines of each series being diverged with respect to each other and meeting at their inner ends, then providing bend lines connecting the junctions of each series of fold lines to form a rectangle, then providing bend lines connecting the outer notches of each series of angular notched portions, the last mentioned bend lines being adjacent to and parallel to the edges of theblank, then providing tab portions laterally of the portion extending outwardl of said last-mentioned bend lines, and t ereafter folding and bending said blank on said fold and bend lines to form side and bottom wall portions and lateral edge flanges and interlocking the adjacent tab portions substantially as described. a
