Description

March 10, 1931/ I J p EISENMANN I 1,795,544
FENCE POST Filed May 27, 1930 gnuentoz r]: PEisEnwzaun Patented Mar. 10, 1931 UNITED STATES JOSEPH P. EISENMANN, F KAYLOR, SOUTH DAKOTA FENCE POST Application filed May 27,
The present invention relates to fence posts and more particularly to a fence post upon which the fence wire may be removably secured.
An object of this invention is to provide a post which may be readily driven into the ground in the conventional manner and which is so constructed that any size of fence wire may be readily mounted thereon, the
device including means for locking the wire upon the fence.
Another object of this invention is'to provide a post of this character with a removable key or locking bar which is adapted to be slidably mounted on the post so as to secure the fence wire thereupon.
A further object of this invention is to'provide a fence post of this character having a suitable anchoring member adjacent the bot-- tom thereof which is adapted to anchor the post in the ground, the anchoring portion being driven into the ground with the post.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary detail front elevation partly in section of a post constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the anchoring member.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally the body of a post which is preferably of substantially hollow construction and is provided at the lower end portion thereof with a restricted end 11 which is adapted to be driven into the ground. The post 10 may be formed by bending a strip of metal into substantially cylindrical con- 59 struction, the free ends of the metal being 1930. Serial No. 456,253.
notched as at 12 so as to provide a plurality of arms or lugs 13, the lugs 13 being adapted to be bent inwardly and the lugs on one marginal edge of the strip being positioned ml spaced relation to the lugs of the opposing e ge.
The upper end of the post or body 10 is preferably formed in substantially cylindrical form as at 14; so as to provide a driving head for the post, and the arms 13 are adapted to extend outwardly from the body so as to provide a vertically disposed key-way for removably receiving a locking key or member 15.
A fence wire 16 of any desired character is adapted to engage the post in the desired notcheslZ thereof resting upon the upper edge portions of the arms 13 and when so positioned the locking bar or key member 15 which is provided with a handle or the like m 17 at the upper end thereof is slid or moved downwardly through the key-way 18 formed by the inwardly extending members 13, the locking member being interposed between the members 13 and the fence wire so that 7 the wire will be positioned in the notches 12 and be held by the inner face or surface of the locking member 15.
An anchoring plate or member 19 having depending members 20 is positioned on the lower end of the post 10 and is adapted to be driven into the ground when the restricted point 11 is driven into the ground. The depending bars 20 prevent circumferential movement of the post 10 and also serve tohold the 7 post in vertically disposed position in the ground. V
In the use of this device, when it is desired to mount a fence wire upon the post the locking member 15 is preferably removed from the body 10 by withdrawing it upwardly therefrom whereupon the point 11 may be positioned in the ground and the post driven therein in the conventional manner. When the post has been properly set in the ground the fence wire 16 may be mounted on the post in the desired notches 12 so that the bottom of the fence will be in the desired position with respect to the ground.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that signature.
notwithstanding the depth of the post in the ground the fence wire may be positioned on the post in the desired notches 12 so that the fence will be in horizontal position with respect to the surface of the ground.
When the wire 16 has been positioned in the desired notches 12 the key or locking member'l5 may be inserted in the upper end of the post and moved downwardly so that" the outer surface of the key 15 will engage against the inwardly extending membersl and the inner surface of the key member will engage against the fence wire so as to force the fence wire against the body of the post and prevent removal of the fence therefrom.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that an exceedingly} simple and practical'fe nce posthas been disclosed by means of which the fence wire maybe easily and securely positioned thereupon and that when it is desired to remove the fence wire from the post it is not necessary to pull the post out of the ground or to injure the fence wire in any mannerinasmuch as the wire may be readily removed by movingthe key member 15 upwardly which will release the' wire and permit its removal from the notches 12.
It is, ofcourselunderstood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specificallydescribcd embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit-thereof, such changesand m0difica tions being restricted only by the scope of the: following claims.
What is claimed is l. Ina fence post, a plurality of complementary guide and wire supporting members stru'ckfrom the body of the post, and an elongated wire 5 locking key slidably engaging' said guide members whereby to releasably secure a wirefe'nce upon said guide members.
21111 a hollow post structure, means for removably securing a wire fence thereto, said means comprisinga plurality'of longitudinally spaced complemental L'-shape'd arms integrally formed with sai'dpo'st'and having one leg thereof disposed laterally of the 1011- gitudinal axis of the post whereby to'proe vide guides outwardly of the body of'the post," and an elongated key member engaging'said guides w'herebyto removablyse cure the wire fence upon said arms, 7
In testnnonywhereof I hereunto aflix' my JOSEPH 'P. EISENMANN.
