Description

1,638,193 D. F. FORWOOD.
GRAVE MARKER Filed July 21, 1926 Patented Aug. 9, 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID F. FORWOOD, OF TAYLOR, TEXAS.
1 GRAVE MARKER.
Application filed July 21, 1926. Serial No. 124,054.
This invention relatesto grave markers. The object of this invention is to produce a grave marker wherein the samemarker may be used in connection with different graves and yet the grave in which the marker is used will be distinguished from other graves by the insignia or inscription carried by the filler plate.
It is common to place temporary markers on new graves while awaiting permanent stones or other markers and it is very desirable to have some insignia or inscription on such temporary markers during this interval. In the usual grave markers, such inscription prevents the use of the same marker for other graves and thus makes the use of such a marker rather expensive. By making the filler plate on which the inscription is placed removable, the person providing such marker may charge a nominal sum for the use of such a marker until the permanent marker can be obtained. The filler plate may then be removed and a new filler plate with suitable inscription or insignia, placed thereon and the whole used in connection with another grave. This means a great saving in money and it is a decided advanta e.
The chief novelty resides in the slidable feature whereby the filler plate carrying an inscription may be removed and other filler plates carrying different inscriptions'substituted.
Still other novelty rests in the U-shaped tubular frame which allows the lower part to be inserted in the ground in the form of supports and presents a very light, economical, unified structure.
Further novelty will be shown by the specification and drawing.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side View of the marker with a filler plate inserted with dotted lines showing the filler plate slidable. Figure 2 is a section taken along line 22 and Figure 3 r is a section taken through line 33. 7
Referring to the drawings, like numerals designate similar parts.
Numeral 1 designates a grave marker consisting of a tubular U-shaped frame 2 with a groove 3 in which is slidably mounted a filler plate 4 in which are various inscriptions or insignia 5. The U-shaped frame 2 has its legs sharpened as at 6 to facilitate penetrating the ground.
As actually used the person desiring such a marker, selects the desired insignia or inscription, the same is placed upon a filler plate and the filler plate placed in the groove 3 of the U-shaped frame 2 and slid upward untilit rests against the top of the U-shaped frame. The marker is then placed on the grave and the legs of the U-shaped member 2 forced into the earth the desired distance.
This marker does not necessarily have to be used in a temporary capacity but may be used permanently. The applicant realizes that the device may be made in Various forms and does not limit himself to the form shown here but leaves himself free to ,the ground to constitute supports.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. DAVID F. FORWOOD.
