UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON'HOWE AND ANDREW HILL, OF WEGATCHIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-VATS.
February 14, 1876.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,719, dated May 23, 1876; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SOLOMON HOWE and ANDREW HILL, of Wegatchie, St-. Lawrence county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Cheese-Vat, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention is a lever and roller attached to the legs and front end ofa cheese-vat for raising and lowering the end by turning the lever, so as to bring the rollers down and lift the vat 011' the legs, or up, so as to let it down on them.
The vats have to be raised in this manner for what is known in the art of cheese-making as wheying off, and for other purposes, which has commonly been done by lifting or prying up the end and setting blocks under it, which is laborious, and is liable to damage the vats by falling and jarring, so as to spring the bottoms aleak, the vats being sometimes very heavy.
Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is an'end elevation, of a vat with our improved raising and lowering'attachment applied to it.
A represents the vat, and B the legs of the end which is to be lifted, in which, near the lower end, is mounted a shaft, 0, having rollers D mounted in arms E, of sufficient length to elevate the vatoff the legs the required height'when the rollers are shifted down under the shaft by the lever F, fitted on one end, where there is also a ratchet-wheel, G, and pawl H for holding the rollers in position.
In practice, the shaft will be made in two sections, to be connected at the middle by a piece of wood, I, fitted in a socket in each piece, the object being to adapt the attachment to vats of different width.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters f Patent- A cheese-vat, A B, as arranged with the shaft 0, roller D, mounted in arms E, the lever F, and the ratchet and pawl G H,all as shown and described.
SOLOMON HOWE.
ANDREW HILL.
