SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,871, dated April 14,1885.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. YVTLLMoRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and or act description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view. Fig. 2 is a side view.

This invention has relation to lifting-jacks for use upon wagons and carriages; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter D represents thelever, which is also the body portion of the jack, the legs A and B being pivoted to the sides of said lever, back of the head portion, on which the head casting G is secured. The head casting 0 is formed with the upper and lower branches, E and F,which extend along the upper and lower edges of the lever-bar, and are perforated for the re ception of the fastening screws. These branches are oblique to the main plate G of the casting, and this plate or end portion is formed with a strong curved hook, H, which extends downward, outward,and upward from the lower end of said plate. The legs A and B are pivoted to the lever by the bolt K, and the advanced leg A is provided with a series of notches or a rack, L, on its forward edge,

to engage the loop or stirrup m of the ad justable tie-rod S. This tie-rod is pivoted to the operatingarm V of the lever, and its loop or stirrup embraces the leg A. When the lever is raised at its head, the loop will fall along the rack, and will continue to fall until the operation of lifting is completed. The weight then, acting on the head of the lever, draws the arm V upward, and the loop of the tie-rodbecomesengagedwith one ofthenotches,

holding the head of the jack at the height to which it has been raised.

Z Z are cast feet, having points or spurs 0: extending downward and adapted to engage the ground. These castings are perforated for the passage of the screws, whereby they are fastened to the lower ends of the legs. In order to provide for greater security of attachment, these feet are cast with flanges Z1 b, so that they have a socket formation, and are adapted to receive the lower ends of the legs.

When in operation the forward leg of the jack extends beyond the vertical line passing through the center of support in the head of the jack, so that there is no tendency in the jack to tip forward or backward. hen the jack is notin use, the loop of the tie-rod may be disengaged from the leg E and the jack folded up in small compass.

It will be observed from the above description and by reference to the annexed drawings that the jack can be readily adjusted to suit different heights of vehicle-axles simply by manipulating the rod S and spreading the legs apart or bringing them nearer together, thus raising or lowering the hook, as occasion may require.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The improved lifting-jack herein described, consisting of the legs A and B, the former having its forward longitudinal face provided with the ratchet-plate L, the tie-rod pivoted to the rear portion of the hand-lever, and adapted to engage the ratchet-plate, and the hand-lever pivoted between the said legs and provided at its power end with the casting C, having an engaging hook, H, and branches E and F, for attachment to the upper and lower sides of the said lever, substantially as shown and described.
