UNITED STATES lPATENT FFICE.
JOHN S. JACKSON, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,117, dated June 16, 1874; applicaiion tiled .Tune 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. JACKSON, ot' Harrisburg, inthe county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference bein ghad to the accompanying' drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a wagon-jack for raising the axle to remove the wheels, &c. My invention consist-s in the combination and arrangement of the various parts, as hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the drawings is presented a view in side elevation of my invention, showing the lever horizontal, and in dotted lines its position after the weight has been raised.
A is a standard, provided on its edge with a tongue, a, to tit into the groove I) of the ratchet-bar B. B is a ratchet-bar, provided at the top with a lever, O, pivoted to it at c. The short end of the lever C is angular shaped so as to gripe and hold itself in Contact with the under side of the axle to be raised, and the pivot c is so situated in a projecting portion, c. of the lever that when the lever is depressed, as shown by the dotted lines, and the weight rests on the end of same, the pressure will be in a line that will fall on the handle side of the pivot c, so there will be no tendency for it to tly back and drop the axle. D is a loose link made to encircle the standard and ratchet-bar. Notches cl l are formed in the back oi' the standard for the purpose of adjusting the link higher or lower, to suit a higher or lower object to be raised. Eis a guard to prevent the link from dropping when the ratchet-bar is raised. e is a spring or catch, that prevents the link from passing from one notch d to another. The spring or catch is operated by the hand when it is desired to change the link to another notch.
The notches may be of any desired number, though two will generally answer every contingency likely to arise.
What I claim isl. In combination with the standard A, having notches d d and ratchet-bar B, the adjustable link D and guard E, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the standard A, provided with notches d d and ratchet B, of the adjustable link D, and guard E, the said guard provided with a spring or catch, e, to retain it in place, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day ot' June, 1874.
