STRAP-ATTACHING AND END-FINISHING DEVICE Application filed October 17, 1928.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be mounted upon straps, bands or the like of various kinds and classes and for numerous uses and particularly for supporting straps or bands in connection with body gar;
ments of various kinds and classes and further to forming a finished end or ends to straps of this class; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified consisting of two cooperating parts, the strap or band being looped through an aperture in one of said parts and the other part being coupled with the loop portion of the strap and cooperating with the other part to lock the strap in predetermined positions of adjustment with relation to the first named part; a further object of my invention being to provide the first named part of the device with an extending portion by 30 means of which the same may be secured to a garment or other support or a member fixed to the garment or support; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and in which Fig. 1 diagrammatically illustrates one method of carrying my invention into effect.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a part of the construction shown in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a back view of the structure shown of any kind or class supported upon the body in Fig. 2 with parts in a different position;
Serial No. 313,012.
of the wearer by strap members 11 which extend over the shoulders and are secured to both the front and back portions of the garment 10 by my improved fastening de ices 12, one of which is employed at each end portion of the separate strap members. All of the devices 12 are of the same construction s(l)1 that the description of one will apply to a The device 12 consists of separate parts 13 and 14 which may be fashioned from any suitable material preferably from a sheet material. The part 13 has a crosshead 15 at one end which is preferably curved or oflset laterally throughout the longitudinal plane thereof to form a concave recess 16. Arranged in the central portion of this recess is an elongated aperture 17 through which one end portion of the strap member or band 11 is adapted to be looped as indicated at 11, Fig. 5 this loop being also shown in full lines in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The other end portion of the member 13 is rounded as seen at 18 and provided with an aperture 19 which is adapted to be placed over a knob or headed member 1O secured to the upper edges of the garment 10, it being understood that any desired form of attaching means may be incorporated at the lower end of the part 13.
The part 14 is in the form of an open loop having a crosshead portion 20 around which the loop part 11 of the strap 11 passes. The other side of the member 14 has a central opening 21 permitting the passage of the strap 11 into the apertured portion 22 of the arms 23 to engage the strap or separate parts of the strap to assist in looking the device 12 or the separate members 13 and 14 thereof against movement relatively to the strap.
In theuse of the device, one end portion of the strap 11 is formed into a loop which is threaded through the aperture 17 in the part 13 to extend from the concave face 16 of said part after which one end of the member 14 is, passed through said loop in the strap. and the member 14 is manipulated to extend the arms 23 at the outer side of the loop porlOG tional form to correspond with the crosssectional form of the upper part of the mem-' tion of the strap as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, after which the part 13 is adjusted to the proper position with reference to the inner or central portion of the strap to adjust the length thereof suitable for supporting the garment 10 properly upon the body of the wearer, after which the free end portion of the strap designated at 11', Fig. 5, is pulled to close the loop 11, moving that part 20 into engagement with the concave face 16 of the member 13, temporarily locking both members 13 and 14 upon the strap 11.
In some uses of the device, the strap 11 together with the end portion 11 may now be locked into engagement with the arms 23 by passing the same through the opening 21 so that said arms 23 willbe arranged upon the inner face of the strap end 11", thus securely locking the parts in position.
In the present showing, the strap 11 alone is placed in the recess 22 through the opening 21 so as to bring the arms 23 on the inner face of said strap as clearly seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing. In this arrangement, the strap end 11 extends downwardly over the front face of the entire device.
In order to avoid folding the free end of the strap upon itself and stitching the same together to form a finished end portion as is a common practice, I employ a device 12 similar in all respects to the device12 in operation but modified only as to the shape or contour of one of the members, namely the member 13 which is substituted for the member 13, the difference being that the member 13 does not have the projecting and apertured end portion. In other words, this member terminates slightly below the aperture-17 formed therein, producing an elongated loopshaped body which is curved in cross secber 13. With this device, a member 14;" identical inall respects to the member 14 is employed and coo erates with the member 13 to lock the on of the strap within and between said members and the reference characters 20, 21, 22 and 23 represent parts identical with the parts 20, 21, 22 and 23.
The purpose of the device 12 is to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the end portion 11 of the strap through the device 12 or the separate parts thereof especially in the adjustment of said parts on the strap. It will be further noted that with my improved construction, a strap or band securing device may be secured to the strap or band without the necessity of threading the end portion of the strap or band through either part of the device.
The attachment is made by looping any part of the strap or band intermediate its ends. beneficial in many uses of the device and especially uses other than that disclosed in' This will prove advantageous and the accompanying drawing. It will also be apparent that the device 12, in addition to forming a finished end to the strap may also serve as an ornamental end, the separate members 1314" or at least one of them being characterized for this purpose.
' It will also be understood that the complete strap member or strap members may be detached from the garment 10 in laundering the same, and should it be desired to launder the straps, the separate members of the devices 12-12 may be readily detached for this purose.
P It will also be apparent that while I'have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect and have illustrated one use of my invention, that I am not necessarily limited in these respects and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
