EATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN NEUMAN, OFPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA;
SWEATER. v
Application filed August 23, 1927.V Serial N0. 214,807.
My invent-ion relates to animprovement in `Sweaters and more particularly to that type of sweater known as a shaker sweater, having` a iaro'e collar and lapels.
Herctoiore in sweaters having; large collars and .vhich are intended to ht rinigly atthe bach o'i theneclq, it has eeen d. icult to maintain a neat appearance at the base of the neel; since the large collar tends to sag, more especially duc to the elasticity oi? the knitted iabric oi' which the sweaters are made', and which gives to the weight or the collar and becomes distorted, with sagging oill the collar, when strain is put on it over the shoulders.
N ow inv accordancewith my invention,
provide a sweater so constructed as to insure the desired snug,l lit or` the collar at the base of the neck through: resistance to sagging' .from the weight o the collar and througgl'x resist-ance to and compensation distortion of the iabricironi strain over the shoulders. f
Having now indicated in a general way the nature andA ,purpose of my` invention, l will proceed to av detailed description ora preferred embodiment thereof with re'rerence to the accompanyingdrawing in which:
Figure l is a front view of the upper por-v tion of a sweater embodying; my invention 1n open position. l j
Figure 2 is a rear view ot the upper portion of the sweater shown in Figure l.
The sweater illustrated and which is made,4
of knitted fabric coinprisesa back portion a, extensions of which 'forni sides and 'front portions, provided with arin holes tnt-o which are secured sleeves c, a collar d and lapels c, which are respectively secured to a iront edge olf the bony portion and at one eud'to an edge o'lf the collar.
The upper edno or the back portion between the. shoulders is recessed for the reception oli the lower portion d ot the collar, the
lower edge and lower portions or the sides of'` which are secured to the edges of the recess, as by knitting.
A strip ol nonelastic*material j" is secured over the line ot juncture of the lower edge of the collar and the back port-ion and elastic sweater to strips g extend under the shoulder portions h from at or adjacent to the ends of the strip f to the top ot the arin holes at the points z' of theshoulders. rlhe nonelastic strip fis securcdas by sewingl throughout a major portion oft its length troni' its ends, its central portion f being tree and forming' a hanger. 'il'.lie elastic strips g are free throughout the major portion or the length, being-secured at r adjacent to theirends at or adjacent to the parts oit the shoulder and at or adjacent to the ends oit the strip lu the use `ot the sweater constructed as described, the nonelastic strip j' will act to posifcly prevent lateral strains from distorting` ine base of the collar l and will also prevent peren ingr the vshoulder portions of the wearer and on release of strain will draw the operate, the latter' permitting and controlline,r strain over the shoulders respectively and the former resisting the transinission'oit strains between the shoulders at the base of the collar and prevei'iting distortion and sagging' of the collar. y
Having' now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: i
ln a sweater in combination, a body provided with arm holes and including;- back and shoulder portions, a collar joined to the back portion of; the body, a strip ol nonelastic rmaterial extending adjacent the line of juncture of the collar and body and elastic strips of elastic material extendingA from points adjacent the ends of said strip of nonolastic materia-lino points adjacent the points or the shoulder portions, said elastic strips being` secured Vadjacent their ends only, the intern'icdiate portions of said strips being,` tree.v i
In testimony of which invention, l have hereunto set niy hand, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on this 22nd day of August, 1927.
