My present invention relates generally to straw hats and more particularly to the type of straw hat which has a relatively rigid -crown portion and a relatively rigid brim portion, Aand an intermediate section connecting said portions so as to provide a fle-Xible, intermediate portion. Such a type is shown in mv Patent No. 1,643,138.

Straw hats ofthe character disclosed herein and in connection with which my invention is to be primarily employed, consist of a crown and a brim, each made up of straw braid arranged spirally with the adjacent spirals secured together in any preferred or desired manner to cause them to maintain their predetermined shape. Body and rigidity are given to the braid assembly forming the crown ofthe brim by means of any preferred filling, sizing or adhesive material.

The object of the present inventionr is to provide a straw hat having thefleaible, part interconnecting the crown andthe brim so. constructed as notonly to simplify and cheapen the process of manufacture lbut to increase the flexibility vof the intermediate portion and improve the wearing characteristics ofthe hat as a whole. l

Other objects of my invention will either clearly appear or be pointed out hereinafter.

In the embodiment of Vmy invention illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification, the intermediate portion. of the hat interconnecting the crown and the'brim is in the form of spirally wound braid laid edge to edge. The adjacent edges of the Y spirals forming the intermediate portion are vsecured together, er ge to edge, bymeans of stitches connecting the adjacent spirals, so as to provide at the edges of contactbetweeii the adjacent braid a connection which permits of increased fiexibility.

showing a portion of the intermediate con- .crown and the brim portions are formedin any preferred or desired manner, and of any character of braid, these portions beingillustrated in the drawings as made up in the conventional way of relatively wide braid,\of comparatively loose weave, having one serrated edge 16 and a smooth edge 17. In .forming these portions from this typek of braid, it is customary to start at the center of the crown, indicated at 19, and cause the braid to curl spirally -first outwardly and then downwardly toward'the band portion, so as to have .the adjacent edgesof the yadjacent curls superposed one upon the other, with the smooth edge of each convolution under the serrated edge of the preceding convolution. These curls are then secured together in any preferred or desired manner, as by stitching, so as to formthe` crown portion of the hat. The brim portion'll is formedin the same manner as is the crown portion, except that-itA is illustrated. in the drawings as made up of s two separate layers 11 and -11" connected to* gether and tothe intermediate portion in a manner that will shortly be described.

It is usual where the curls or convolutions forming ther brim or the crownportions'are secured together by stitches, to employ a concealed stitchingmachine so that the stitching will not Vbe apparent to the observer. y

The intermediate connecting section 12 is illustrated in Fig. 3, and is made up of two portions 12 and 12 associated together, and with the crown and brim portions, in a manner which will also be shortly pointed out, it being sufficient for the moment to state that these portions 12 and 12 are formed inthe samemanner, and a descriptionv of the formation of one will suffice for both.

rlhe braid employed in forming the inten mediate section 12 is preferably smooth on V both sides and has no teeth and may be of any desired or preferred width. To form the intermediate section this character of braid is" spiralled first downwardly in a vertical plane edge-wedge engagement. The adjacent spi-4 rals are then secured in this position by a stitch which passes from one spiral to the adjacent spiral across the joint between the two, and in the embodiment herein disclosed I showthe employment of the zigzag stitch 20 for this purpose.

The assembling of the various sections to form the straw hat comprises the following steps: The crown and brim portionsl() and 11 are first made complete and may be stiffq end or loaded before assembling. The upper part 1 2 ofthe intermediate section is rst secured to the brim by a Yzigzag stitch, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. with the lower edge of the crown portion, illustrated in this embodiment, `as superimposed above the upper edge of the outer section 12 of the intermediate part of the hat. It will be understood, of course, that both sections 12 and 12 are made withV portions one in a horizontal plane and another in a vertical plane so as to have them conform to and form continuations of the crown and brim portions of the hat, respectively.

The horizontal portion of this part 1Q is then secured to the upper member or layer 11 ofthe brim 11 by zigzag stitches, with the edge ofthe `part 12 superimposed above the inner edge portion of the brim member 11. The lower member 12 of the intermediate section 12 is attached to the lower brim member 11": by zig-zag stitches, with the position ofthe superimposed edges of the two reversed from that shown in connection with the upper brim member. The parts are then assembled; by sewing the free upper end of the lower fieXible portion 12 to the vertical por tion of the member 12 by any preferred or desired character of stitching. This will complete the assen'ibly of the hat.

I have found that by forming 'the intermediate section of the braid spirally wound and secured together in the manner set forth in this specification, I have attained the following results and advantages. 1. A straw hat comprising a relatively rigid crown part, a relatively rigid brim part, and a flexible section intermediate of and connecting the two, said section comprising a braid wound so as to cause the adjacent convolutions to present their adjacent edges with an edge to edge contact in a common plane, and means for securing the adjacent edgesin such Contact whereby the flexibility of said intermediate section is increased.

2. A straw lhat comprising a relatively rigid crown part and a relatively rigid brim partmade up of two superposed sections, said crownpart and said brim sections being formed of straw braidarranged in spiral overlapping relation, and a flexible part com prising two superposed sections each comprising braid positioned edge to edge and secured together edge to edge with a vertical portion and a horizontal portion, the-upper of said intermedia-,te sections being secured to the crown part at one end and upon the upper of the brim sections at its otherend, and the ,lower of said intermediate sections being secant srnmnnne.
