To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, HERMAN Jumcrna citizen of the United States, residing at ew Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Straw Cap, of which the following is a specification.

The device forming the subject matter of this application is an article of headwear, embodied in the present instance, but not necessarily, in the form of a cap, and one object of the invention is to improve the ventilator which constitutes a part of the cap.

Another object of the invention is to improve the means whereby the constituent elements of the side wall of the cap, and the ventilator, are connected together.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, an article of headwear constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a fragmental section showing a portion of the inside of the article of headwear; and

Fig. 3 is a section taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

The cap forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of straw throughout, with the exception of the sweat,

band and the vizor and includes a bottom strand 1 which may be extended in two convolutions around the cap at the bottom thereof. Disposed above the bottom strand 1 is a second strand 2, extended around the cap in a single convolution. strand 2 is colored differently from the strand 1, and may be yellow, to simulate gold braid. The ends of the strand 2 are over lapped as shown at 3. Disposed above the second strand 2 is a third strand 4, extended around the cap in a plurality of convolutions, spirally, the strand 4 constituting the major portion of the side wall of the cap. Disposed above the strand 4 is a fourth strand 5 which, like the strand 2 preferably is made of yellow straw, so as to imitate The second gold braid; The ends of the strand 5 are overlapped as shown at 6-. thestrand 5 is a fifth strand 7 extended around the cap in one or more spiral convolutions. One end 8 of the strand 7 is overlapped on the strand 5, and the other end 9 of the strand 7 is overlapped on a ventilator, which will now be describe I The ventilator consists of a plurality of loosely braided strips 10 defining ventilating openings 11. The ends of the strips which make up the ventilator are overlapped as shown at 12 and stitched together transversely as shown at 14. The lower edge of the ventilator extends outside of the strand 7, as shown at 15, the upper edge of the ventilator extending, as shown at 16, inside of a strand 17 wound in a plurality of spiral convolutions, and merging into a top 18. The strande forms the lower part of the side wall of the cap, and the strand 17 forms the upper part of the side wall of the cap. The parts above enumerated are united by spiral stitchings 19, it being understood that the various convolutions are overlapped vertically of the cap. The stitching-which unites the convolutions of the strand 7 engages the lower edge of the ventilator made up of the strips 10, and the stitching which unites the convolutions of the strand 17 en: gages the upper edge of the ventilator.

A sweat band 20 may be placed inside of the cap and preferably is attached by stitching or otherwise, as shown at 21, to the bottom strand 1. As usual, a vizor 22 is connected with the lower edge of the cap.

Owing to the way in which the braided strips 10 are mounted in the cap, a ventilator of novel form is provided, and this ventilator is held in place by the stitchings which unite together the constituent convolutions of the strand 17, upon the and the constituent convolutions of the strand 4-upon the other hand.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is An article of head-wear comprising a crown'including a lower side part made up of a spirally disposed strand of straw, and an upper side part made up of a spirally disposed strand of straw; a circumferential strip comprising strands of straw braided to form ventilating openings, the ends of the strip being connected, the longitudinal edges one hand,

of the strip being overlapped on the longij tudinal edges of the lower and upper parts posed below the ventilating strip, and thebeing exposed outer surface of the strip around the crown, the strands of the strip being of substantially the same cross section as the strands of the crown thereby to form an adequate support for the upper part of 10 the crown.
