ADJUSTABLE HAT-LINING OR BANDEAU.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, MAXIME L. VAN Home, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of the city of New York, zruburndale, Flushing, borough of Queens, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Hat-Lining or Bandeau, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to adjustable hat linings such, for instance, as shown and described in the Letters Patent or" the United States. No. 1,225,618, granted on May 8, 1.917, to Frederic Grunig and Maxime L, Van Huele.

The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved adjustable hat lining or bandeau arranged to permit of. se curely and quickly adjusting the lining or bandeau and fastening it in the adjusted position in a hat.

Another object is to provide a hat lining or bandeau which is exceedingly simple and durable in construction and adapted to be fastened to a hat without the use of stitches.

Another object is to insure the fitting of any style of hat to a wearers head.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and. then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a hat lining as applied to a hat and showing the improved fastening means for attaching the adjustable hat lining to the hat;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged inverted sectional plan view of the same on the line 22 of F ig. 1;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;

The crown of the adjustable hat lining comprises a side portion 10 made of sill, sateen or similar flexible fabric, and the top Specification of Letters Patent.

11 made of a similar material but usually stiffened and of oval shape to conform to the shape of the crown of the hat 12 in which. the lining is used. The side portion 10 is provided at its lower end with a hem 1? containing a constricting member 1. preferably in the form of a draw string of an elastic or non-elastic material, with the ends extending through openings 17 in the hem to permit of tying the ends into a bow 18 after the desired adjustment is made of the lining relative to the size of the users head. From the hem 15 extends integrally a ring-shaped attaching portion 19 of unbroken continuity and terminating at its outer edge in a hem 20 containing a strip 21 of. spring material such as steel and preferably ot' a size that the ends are arranged in overlapping relation, as plainly shown in Figs. 2, l. and The strip 21 is provided with a plurality of fixed points 22 arranged in spaced relation and either struck up from the strip material as shown in l or fcrmedon sleeves 23 soldered or otherwise secured to the strip 21. in addition to the fixed points 22 use is made of a movable point formed on a sleeve 26 slidably mounted on the strip 21 adjacent one end thereof. It is understood that the points 22 and 27 project outwardly and are adapted to engage the material oi the but 12 at the lower end of the crown to fasten securely the lining in place in the hat, It will 'be. noticed that by having the slidable point 25 the hem 20 can be readily adjusted to fit the lower end of the crown of the hat 12, it being understood that the portion of the hem at the overlapping end of the strip 21 is liable to pucker. as indicated in Fig. 2. It

will be noticed that the fixed point 22 on one end of the strip 21 holds the latter against movement relative to the hat 12, but the other end. of the strip 21 can be adjusted to fit the hat as such end is slidable in the sleeve 26 of the point 25. It will be noticed that by the construction set forth the attaching portion 19 can be made ring shape and of unbroken continuity and it can be adjusted to the size of the wearers head by the constricting member 16 and to the size of the hat by having the slidable point- 25 on. the adjustable strip contained in the hem.

The bandeau shown in Fig. 6 is ringshaped and of unbroken continuity the same as the attaching portion 19 and is provided and a strip oi? with an inner hem 31 and an outer hem 32. The inner hem 81 contains a constricting member 33, preferably in the form of a draw string of an elastic or non-elastic materia with the ends projecting through openings 3% in the hem 31 to allow of tying the ends into a .bow knot after the adjustment is made. The outer hem 32 contains the attaching device above described in the form of: a strip 21 of spring material having fixed pointsQfZ and an adjustable point 25 held on a sleeve 26 slidable onthe strip 21.

The points 22 and 25 extend outward and serve to attach the bandeau to thelower end oi the crown of thehat 12, the same as above described relative to the hat lining.

Having thus described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent y 1. In combination, a hat lining or ban deau having a continuous ring-shaped piece of flexible material provided with an inner hem and. an outer hem, a constricting member in the said inner hein to permit of adjusting the said piece of flexible material, spring material contained in the said outer hem, and points on the said strip for fastening the hat lining or bandeau to a hat, at least one of the said points being slidably mounted on the said strip.

2. In combination, a hat lining or bandean having a continuous ring-shaped piece of flexible material of unbroken continuity, the said piece having an inner hem contaiir ing a] constricting member and an outer hem containing a strip of spring material, the said strip havinga plurality of spaced fixed points and a point adjustably mounted on the strip, the said points being adapted to engage a hat to fasten the hat lining or bandeau in place.

3. In combination, a hat lining or bandeau having a continuous ring-shaped piece ot'flexible material of unbroken continuity,

strip of spring'material carried at the outer edge of said head portion, said strip of spring material being providez'l with iiXed spurs, and a slidable spur normally positioned near one end of said strip oi spring material whereby the strip of spring niaterial any be adjusted to increase and decrease the outer diamet-er of the baudeau without effecting the continuous structure of the head portion.

A bandea-u for bats comprising a continuous ring of fabric forming a head portion, a draw string;- structure for constricting the inner edge of said i and a spring structure for constricting o; expanding the outer edge, said spring structure comprising a strip oi? sprii metal provided with a lot of fixed spurs extendingou-twardly, and

spur slidingly mounted thereon whereby the strip of spring metal may slide through the last mentioned spur for increasing and decreasing the outside diameter oi said head portion.

6. In bandeau for hats a fastening men;-

metal, a plurality of spurs secured theret and extending outwardly therefrom, and a sliding spur mounted to slide on. said strip. a limited distance at one end thereof.
