Description

F ALHUNT & B. M'. BUTTERFIELIL' I I Draft-Equalizer.

WITNESSES. INVENTORS N. F6515. FNOTD-UTHDGRAPNER, WESHINGTON, D C.
.1 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ALMON HUNT AND BENJAMIN M. BUTTERFIELD, OF MAGOMB, ILLINOIS; SAID BUTTERFIELD ASSIGNOR TO SAID HUNT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 67,337, dated August 31, 1875; application filed July 31, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALMON HUNT and BENJAMIN M. BUTTERFIELD, of Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Three-Horse Double-Trees; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings making a part of this speci fication.
Our invention consists in an improved means whereby the draft of three horses working abreast is equalized, which will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the drawing, A represents a tongue, to which the lever G is attached, at 1', on the top of which, by the same bolt, is attached a short arm or plate, 02, which extends the same distance as it is from r to 13, and there attached to double-tree B. In the rear, on the tongue A, at t, the lever e is attached. This lever is two and a half times the length from J to t as it is from d to t, and is attached by a chain at the short end (1 to the lever O, at i, being by chains to the center of the double-tree B.
The operation is us follows: Single-trees are attached to the clevises s s s, to which the draft-horses are hitched, and when the draft is applied, the horse that is hitched to the lever G, by means of the lever e and chains 0 0, draws just one-third of the draft. The plate or arm at. having the double-tree B attached to it at the same distance from the center of the tongue as it is from 1' to t, equalizes the side draft.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The lever 0, arm n, lever e, and flexible chains 0 o, in combination with the doubletree B, as and for the purpose set forth.
A. HUNT. B. M. BUTTERFIELD.
