Be it known that I,-Dnvrn FrrcnRonnms; of Berlin, Steele county, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Four-Horse Eveners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan View of my improvement.

The object of this invention is to provide means for attaching four horses abreast to a harvester in such a manner that each horse will be compelled to draw one-quarter of the load.

The invention consists in a four-horse evener constructed with a cross-bar attached to the tongue, and having pulleys at its ends, around which passes a chain connected at its ends with levers pivoted at their inner ends to the tongue, and provided at. their outer ends the one with a whiffletree and the other with an ordinary three-horse evener, so that the draft against the downward pull of the said evener by a brace attached to the outer part of the said lever, and pivotedto the tongue by the pivoting-bolt of the said lever, as will be hereinafter fully described.

To the rear part of the tongue A is attached the center of across-bar, 13, which is strengthened in position by a curved brace, 0, formed upon or attached to the said crossbar, and attached at its center to the tongue A. The ends of the cross-bar B are bent upward and inward into bow form, and to them are pivoted grooved pulleys D, around which passes a chain, E, the bonds of the end bows of the cross-bar 13 serving as guards to keep the said chain in place upon the said pulleys. One end of the chain E is connected by a clevis,F, or other suitable means, with a lever, G, at

a point midway between the center and the pivot at the inner end of the said leven. The inner end of the lever G is pivoted to the tongue A by a bolt, H, and with its outer end is connected a whiffletree, I. The other end of the chain E is connected by a clevis, J, or other suitable means, with the center of the lever K, the said lever K being made of such a length that the point of attachment of the end of the chain E to the said lever K willbe at a distance from the central line of the tongue A equal to three times i the distance of the point of attachment of the first-mentioned end of the said chain E to the lever G from the said central line of the tongue A. The inner end of the lever K is pivoted to the tongue A by a bolt, L, and with its outer end is connected an ordinary three-horse evener, M N r 0. With this construction one horse will work at one side of the tongue A and three horses at the other side of the said tongue,

and each horse will be compelled to draw'onequarter of the load.

To the lower side of the tongue A is pivoted, by the bolt L, that pivots the inner end of the lever K to the said tongue, the inner end of the brace 1, the outer part of which is made with an upward offset, and its outer end is pivoted by a bolt, Q, to the lever ,K about midway between the points of attachment of the chain E, and the threehorse evener M N 0, so that the said lever K will be strengthened against the downward pull of the weight ofthe three-horse evener M NO, connected with the outer end of the said lever K.

In the bow of the cross-bar B, at the side of the tongue A at which the three horses work, are formed two or more holes to receive the pivot of the pulley D, so that the said pulley can be adjusted nearer to or farther from the tongue A, according as the machine to which the evener is to be attached may have more or less side-draft.

The upper ends of the pivoting-bolts H L are strengthened against the pressure of the levers G K by a hammerstrap, R, hinged at one end to the tongue A by a staple, S, or other suitable means. u

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A four-horse evener constructed sub-l stantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the cross-bar 13, having grooved pulleys D, the chain E, passing around the said pulleys, and the levers G K, connected with the ends of the said chain, and provided the one with a whiffletree and the other with athree-horse evener, as set forth.

2. The combination. with the tongue A, the whiffletree I, and the three-horse evener M N O, of the cross-bar B, the pulleys D, the chain E, and the levers G K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the draft will be equally divided, as set forth.
