DRAFT-EQUALIZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,727, dated August 13, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be'it known that I, WILLIAM LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sank Centre, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figuresof reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in draft-equalizers; and the nature thereof consists in providing a draft-bar having a flexible connection to the tongue, and in connecting suitable double and single trees to the said bar, whereby each horse will be caused to transmit his full share of Work to the said tongue, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar parts are designated by corresponding letters, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective, taken from the bottom 'of the tongue, guard-plate, link, and chain.

The tongue A has upon its lower surface the guard plate or bracket a, which is curved and projects to one side thereof. Between the said tongue and the bracket to, and at substantially a right angle to the former, is the draft-bar B, the middle of the said bar having a screw-staple b, to which is attached the draftchain Cat one end, the other end of the said chain being attached to the base of the As shown in the drawings, the draft-bar-B extends to unequal lengths on the opposite sides of the tongue, thus causing the chain 0 to be attached to the baI-B at a distance from the tongue, while screw-staplesb are inserted in the ends of the bar. A doubletree D,-having suitable singletrees cl, is attached, by means of alink cl, to the staple bon the 01f end of the bar-4'. e., on the end of the bar which is farthest from the tongue. A plate E is attached to the bracket a 011 the oif side of the tongue, and is connected to the chain F, attached to the staple b 011 the rear end of the bar, the junction between the plate and chain F being formed by the ring G, to which is attached the doubletree H, one of the singletrees h h, which is on the off side of' the tongue, while the other is on the near side thereof.

Holes J are placed in the bar B, in order that the staples may be changed in their relative position to one another, in order to accommodate changes in the strength, number, 850., of the horses.

Horses being attached to the singletrees d and h, if the pull exerted thereby is the same the draft-bar will have the position shown in Fig. 1. In this position the fulcrum of the bar B is the point of attachment of the chain 0. The far team pull directly on the end of the bar B, while the near team p'ull at an angle, and to cause this inequality to cease I attach one end of the chain F to the end of the bar and the other end to the link E, thus increasing the pull of the near team.

Having described my invention,what'1 claim 1s 1. The combination of a tongue, a draft-bar connected to the tongue by a chain or link which receives the pull, the said bar being of unequal lengths on the opposite side of the tongue, a chain attached to the near end of the said bar and to the tongue and having single and double trees attached thereto, and single and double trees on the far end of the bar, as and for the purposes described.

In a draft-equalizer, the combination, with a tongue, of a bracket on the bottom thereof, a draft-bar passing between them, a draft-chain connecting the said bar to the tongue, a chain and plate, one end of which is attached to one end of the bar and the other to the tongue, and tractiondevices attached to the said chain and plate and to the other end of the bar, as and for the purposes described.
