Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrron.
CLARA P. CLARK, or WAKEFIELD, M ssAcHUsETTs.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKIRT-SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,905, dated June 29, 1875; application filed December 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA P. CLARK, of Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Skirt-Supporters, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a rear view of a corset with my improved skirt-supporters applied. Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 is a central transverse vertical section, of my improved skirt-supporter.
The object of the, present invention is to provide a simple, economical, and eflicacions skirt-supporter, that is applicable more particularly to so-called shoulder-strap corsets,
, to relieve the weight of the skirts from the wearers hips 5 and to this end my invention consists of a metal or other suitable skirtsupporter constructed to be readily applied to a corset and support the skirts of the wearer, asI will now proceed to describe and point out in my claim.
In the drawings, A represents my improved skirt-supporter, which is formed of metal or other material suitable for the purpose, bent or otherwise formed at right angles in a ver tical portion, a, from whose bottom projects outwardly a horizontal portion, 1), formed on the front with upward-extendin g serrations c.
The vertical portion a is curved on the top and ends, as shown, or may be otherwise neatly and economically shaped, as desired, and is formed with holes "d to receive eyelets, which clamp it to thecorset B. Or the plate a may be cut with prongs or clamps that extend through, and are bent to clamp against the inside of the corset. Or the plate a may be arranged in any of the well-known methods, to be readily attached to a corset.
The serrations 0 may be either pointed or rounded, the latter formation being preferable, to hold the skirts without tearing or cutting into them.
The supporters A are clamped, sewed, or otherwise attached, as pmferr'ed, to'a corset at the rear, one or more on each side of a center, just above the hips or in the most desirable position to sustain the skirts, Whose upper portion is supported and prevented from slipping or sagging by the horizontal and serrated portions of the plate, so as to relieve the hips from the weight of the skirts, which are thus held'by a corset supported from the shoulders of the wearer by the straps e or arm-bands, 87c.
Instead of the serrations c, the plate I) may, if preferred, be flanged upward, to form one or more projections of any desired shape, to serve the required purpose.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is
A skirt-supporter consisting of the vertical serrations a, horizontal portion 1), and vertical portion (0 adapted to be attached to a corset, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLARA P. CLARK.
