UNITED STATE PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM H. MARTIN, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,673, dated May 25,1875; application filed March 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MARTIN, of Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Toy Gun, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved toy gun; and Fig. 2, a horizontal longitudinal section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to a toy gun of considerable power that may be readily handled for target-shooting by children, and other purposes, without the least danger in the use of the same.
The invention consists of a longitudinal slotted barrel, with ball or arrow propelling tached, by means of rubber, spiral, or other springs O, of suitable power, to a collar, D, at the end of the muzzle of the barrel, the springs being fastened in suitable manner to slide-piece and collar at both sides of the barrel. Elastic block-cushions b in slot to, back of the collar, break the force of the slide as it is carried by the springs to the end of the barrel. The slide-piece B is provided with a rearextending hook or arrow, B, that is locked by means of pivoted spring-jaws E, arranged in a recess of the gun-stock. A slotted piece, F, with V-shaped front end, slides on lateral guide-pins cl of the stock, and acts on the rear ends of the spring-jaws E. A trigger, F, engages a recess of slide F, and carries the same forward on being pulled. The rear arms of the spring-jaws E arethereby forced together and the front part opened, so as to release the spring-acted slide-piece and propel thereby the ball-arm or other missile with considerable power from the barrel. On pulling back the slide-piece for the next shot the arrow end spreads the jaws, which carry, by their action on the V-shaped slide, the same and the trigger back without requiring retiu'ning-springs, which, however, may be provided, if desired.
The trigger is quickly and easily charged, as the slide-piece works freely and easily in the barrel, and forms an ei'itertaining and harmless toy for childrens sport.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with slide B and slotted barrel, of muzzle-collar and cushion-blocks arranged on a toy gun, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the barrel and stock, of arrow-head slide B B and spring-jaws E, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with spring-jaws E, having divergent rear arms, of the triggeroperated slide F, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose described.
