IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 154,240., dated August 18, 1874 application filed June 6,1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM GOFORTH, of Windsor, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the following is a specification:

The invention relates to constructing the chair-seat with rearward-extended side bars, and the manner of arranging or attaching the back of the chair, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the chair, which illustrates the main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig; 1, taken on the line a: .00.

A represents the seat. B is the back; 0, one of the back legs. 1) D are rounds, and E oneof the front legs. The side rails of the 1 seat, it will be seen, extend back over the back legs, and the back of the chair is fastened to them by means of screws F F, or in any substantial manner.

By thus allowing the side rails to run back, the seat can be attached to the back by inside as well as outside screws, as seen, which makes the connection firm and durable.

The back or rear legs of the chair are brought forward at their top ends and attached about one-fourth the distance to the front from the back ends. of the side rails of the seat, so that they serve as braces and supporters of the seat.

The lower ends of the back pieces are attached to the back legs, as seen at G, Fig. 1, by means of screws, or in some other substantial manner. I

By putting together the chair in this manner, it is rendered firm and durable and greatly superior in point of strength to chairs of ordinary construction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the chair-seat frame A, supported on the four fixed legs 0 E and extended rearward, as specified, of the back B, connected with the projecting portions of frameA and with the rear legs 0 by means of screws, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
