Description
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GARDNER, OF GLEN GARDNER, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR VOF TWO THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO OLIVER L. GARDNER AND GEORGE GARDNER,
OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIR'S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,568, dated June 3, 1673; application filed March 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GARDNER, residing in Glen Gardner, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have in. vented a new and useful Improvementin Rocking and other Chairs, of which the following is a clear and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which the l figure illustrates a vertical central section of my improved chair.
The nature of my invention consists in a chair with the seat and back-piece secured respectively to a rail uniting the front legs to the hind legs, and to a rail uniting the back/standards, by which the seat-frame is dispensed with, &c., substantially as hereinafter more fully specified.
To enable others to make and use my invention I willr describe it.
In the drawing, `A Al refer to the seat and back, composed of one piece, made from some suitable material. The seat and back are fastened in place by nails or other suitable means, respectively, upon the rail a, uniting the front legs B upon the upper ends of the hind legs C, and to the rail d uniting the back standards D. By thus constructing the seat and back and adjusting them to the chair-frame the seatframe is dispensed with, which lessens the expense incurred in the manufacture of the chair', and makes it less cumbersome. E refers to one of the arms of the chair, which are curved and carried downward at both ends and fast-` ened to the seat, or bolted or screwed to both' the seat and the front-leg rail a and the hind legs C. By adopting the latter course the arms will serve to assist in bracing the forward and hind legs together, which will increase the strength of the chair. The lower ends of the back standards are made to unite with the upper ends of the hind legs` C, so as to form a bearing for the rear curved end of the seat, which adds 'strength to the seat.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe seat and back A A composed of one piece, yin combination with the rail a of the front legs, hind legs C, the rail d, the back
