- N0.15 4,375. Patented Aug.25,1874.
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM. W. CRAWFORD, or DELAWARE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,375, dated August 25, 1874 application filed J une 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CRAW- FORD, of Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Chair, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side View, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved chair.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved chair, which is constructed in a strong and neat manner, and is more comfortable, by giving greater play to the feet. My invention con-' sists of a chair, the arms of which are support-ed, back of th'efront legs, by separate supporting-pieces, connecting the side rounds or stretchers and seat.
In the drawing, A represents my improved chair, having a seat, back, and frame, constructed in any approved manner and finish. The arms B of the chair, however, are not extended as far forward, and attached to the fore legs 0, or the seat D, as in the customary manner, but are shortened, and supported by upright pieces E, Which connect the arms Bwith the seat D and side stretchers or rounds F at some distance back of the fore legs 0. The
stretcher F passes either through the perfo= rated lower end of the upright E, or the latter rests on, and is attached in a suitable manner to, the stretcher. The upright E is screwed, bolted, or otherwise connected to the seat, and socketed to the under side of arm B.
The shorter arms give not only greater freedom to the body, as the legs may be moved to the side of the chair, but also increased strength by the additional uprights supporting and distributing the weight of the body on the back and seat.
A comfortable chair, with aneat and orna- WILLIAM W. CRAWFORD.
