To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD S. Brno, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door catches or checks, and consists, substantially, in the improvements hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims;
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device which, when mounted in the proper position in the path of movement of a door, will engage with the door automatically and will retain the same securely in open position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for this purpose which requires no manual effort in its'door retaining operation, as it is wholly automatic in such action.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a device ofthis character and for the purposes stated which dispenses with the use of springs, weights or other suchopcrating or adjusting mechanism, and yet which will. operate effectively and with certainty at all times.
A still further object is to provide a door stop and catch which requires no attachments or devices upon the door itself; which will not mar or scratch the door, and which does not present unsightly appearance.
A still further object is to provide a door catch of the, character stated which is featured by the lack of complicated mechanism; which may be easilyand quickly applied; which requires no manual skill or special tools in its proper application; which requires no attention after once being applied; which is of such simple construction as to be capable of being manufactured at small cost, and yet which will prove effective and reliable at all times.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of con struction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a door, and illustrating in connection therewith a door catch of my invention, Figure 2 is a top plan view of the catch, Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view narrow.
that my improved device comprises an oblong block so constructed and arranged that when a door is brought into contact therewith, the block is moved or -carried laterally upon its pivot in such manner that the door is permitted to pass between the locking shoulders of the device and to operate upon one of these shoulders so as to drawthe other into engaging position upon the door. When so positionedthe door is precluded from closing, however, when it is desired to release the door, the foot may be used to move the free end of the block so that the shoulder thereof passes beyond the end of the door, whereupon the latter may be swung. to closed position. The device may be constructed of wood, hard rubber, cast metal, stamped metal, or other suitable material, and is JL'ZlOfilCEillLV noiseless in operation and not liable to getout of order.
More particularly, the block comprises a body indicated at 5 substantially long and From one side of this block project locking shoulders or surfaces 6 and 7 the same being spaced apart a. distance substantially equal to or slightly greater than the thickness of a door. A pivot pin, such as a. screw 8, is passed through the block near the shoulder 6 thereof, and embeds itseli into a floor or other surface. It is preferred that the pivot be located substantially in from the inner end of the body and slightly in the rear of shoulder 6, so that the latter will be olfset'therefrom. 7 i
The free end of the block is provided with a beveledsurface indicated at 9 which, in conjunction with shoulder 7 nose for cooperation with the door.
The under surface of the block is provided near the free end thereof' with a laterally disposed slot or opening 10 which receives a stop constituting a pin orscrew 11 secured T in the floor. i
In'applying the catch thus constructed,
, constitutes a the screw 8 will be driven into the floor at the positionwhere it is desired that the door be stopped and held. This screw is located in such position that when the door is swung to the full open position, it will come into contact with the offset shoulder 6 and further movement of: the door will cause sail shoulder to move rearwardly so as to swing the block upon its pivot 8, drawing the free end of the stop inwardly toward the door so as to engage the nose or shoulder 7 upon the rear face of the door. The pin or stop member 11 is driven into the floor in such position that the block will be prevented moving outwardly such distance as will draw the shoulder is out of the path of movement of the door, but permits or" the door, in its opening position, forcing the free end of the block outwardly to permit the door to clear the nose 7 and at the same time setting the shoulder 6 in tripping position.
lVith the block arranged in the position mentioned, should the tree end of the block be at the limit oi its inward moven'ient, the door swinging open will first engage the beveled face 9 and force the tree end (it the block outwardly so as to permit the edge of the door passing the nose. When this movement is taking place, the shoulder 6 is being brought into such position that when engaged by the door as it swings "further open, it will be moved rearwardly, causing the block to rotate upon its pivot 8 and bring the shoulder 7 into engagement with the opposite surface of the door. lVhen so positioned, it is apparent that the door will be held against movement either to further open position or in the direction oi: closing, and the door will be thus retained until the check is moved so as to release the same. This latter action may be brought about by bringing the toe in contactwith the beveled surface 9 and moving the block outwardly until the nose clears the edge ot the door. Should the blocl: be so positioned that upon opening movement of the door the edge of the latter will clear the said nose. the shoulder 6 will be in tripping position, whereupon the locking or gripping action will he carried out in the manner above stated.
In the modified torn'i oi? the invention, the structure remains the same ertccpt as to the configuration ot' the inner end of the block.
The inner end in this modification is round ed and is of cam formation, having an enlargement or men'iber 12. This cam member is in the rear of the pivot member 8, and comes into contact with a base board or wall 13- .immediately the door has reached the limit of its opening movement. In applying the device of this modified construction, care must be taken that the pivot. 8 be properly positioned, so that immediately upon engagement of the door with the shoulder 7, and the swinging of the block to clamping position, the cam enlargement 12 will move into contact with the base board or wall 18. An advantage of this particular term of. check is that the pivot 8 and stop 11 are relieved of any strain in the event the door is violently moved to open position, as the cam surtace 12 locks against the base board or wall 13 immediately the clamping position has hecn reached. In other respects the device is similar, both in construction and in operation, to the pre ferred embodiment of the invention.
It is apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a door stop and cl'iech which is o't extremely simple construction. which has no parts to become disordered or easily broken. which may readily be installed and which requires no attention after once having been applied, and which will effectively accomplish the several objects set forth.
The operation is such that betore the door reaches the shoulder 6, the latter will he in set or cocked position to be operated upon by the door, as it will he understood that it the nose of the block is beyond the path of the opening door the shoulder u will he in proper position to be operated upon. while otherwise the opening ot the door will 'torce the free end of the block outwardly to cock the shoulder 6.
\Vhile the above is a description oi the invention in its preferred embodiments. it will be understood that various changes in the minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may he resorted to it desired or found expedient. without depart.- ing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim l. in combination, a swinging door and a wall toward or away from whicl'i said door is adapted to swing. of a pivoted check in the path of movement of said do r and adapted to engage and hold the same when the door has moved a predeteru'iined distance. and a'cain surface on said check eugageable with said wall when the said door las been en; 'ed with the check.
2. In combination, a swinging door and a wall toward or away from which said door is adapted to move, of a check comprising elongated block pivoted at one end near said wall and adjacent to the path of the movement of the free edge of the door, a pair of shoulders on said block between which the said free edge of the door engages when moved. a predetermined distance, and a cam surface on the end of said block adjacent to the pivot thereoi adapted to engage with said wall when the said door is engaged between said shoulders.
