Application filed July 3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen J. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachuse ts, have invented new and useful Tn'iprovements in Door- Stops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door stops oftho type designed to be applied near the bottom of the door and engage with the floor for the purpose of holding the door in the desired position.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a door stop of simple and economical COIlSiEl'UCL-lOll, being composed of a small number of strongly constructed elements and assembled in a manner to permit of their renewal, should any of the parts become worn or in any manner damaged.
The invention therefore includes a grooved bracket arm secured to the face of the door near the bottom thereof and having pivoted thereto a shoe provided with an engaging surface formed on an arc tangent to the pivot, the bracket arm also carrying a shoe engaging spring which is formed with a locking surface, by means of which the shoe may be yieldingly held at the limit of one of its movements, the shoe being also provided with right and left hand foot engaging flanges for its convenient manipulation.

Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, there is shown a bracket arm 10, which is provided with an attaching flange 11, located at one end thereof and by means of which the arm 10 is secured to the door, screws or similar fastening devices 12 being utilized for this purose.

inner face of the door near the bottom thereof, and has pivoted thereto a floor engaging shoe 13, the said shoe being provided with a cam 1%, which extends upward within the longitudinally disposed slot 15 formed in the bracket arm 10. The shoe 13 is pivoted within the bracket arm through the medium of a pivot pin 16, which passes through apertures formed in each side of the bracket arm 10 and through an aperture 17 in the shoe 13.
Secured to the under face of the bracket 10 by means of the screw 18, is one end of a flat spring 19, the said spring extending within the slot 15 and into an opening 20 formed in the top surface of the bracket arm 10. The inwardly extending arm 21 of the spring 19 is of sufficient length to permit the shoe engaging portion of the spring to extend above the cam 14:, this portion of the frame being formed with a locking ridge 22 and an inwardly extending extremity 23, the former being adapted to engage the cam portion 14 of the locking shoe to hold the said shoe in an inoperative position.
The engaging surface 2% of the shoe 13 is formed on the are tangent with the pivot 16, so as to provide an eccentric floor engaging surface, which will lock the door to the floor and prevent its movement in a closed direction, the shoulder portion 25 of the shoe 13 abutting against the arm 21 of the spring to limit the outward swinging movement of the shoe and to prevent the shoe from reaching a dead center.
In order to provide a positive gripping surface for the shoe, the surface 24: is covered with a friction strip 26, of leather or analogous material, which is secured to the shoe through the medium of springs 27, so that this friction strip may be at any time renewed, without removing the stop from the door.
The shoe 13 is adapted to be moved to an operative and an inoperative position by means of the foot, thereby eliminating the necessity of stooping over to properly set the shoe, and in order to accomplish this the said shoe is provided with laterally and oppositely extending foot engaging flanges 28, which extend sufiiciently far upon either side of the shoe for convenient engagement with the foot.
Secured to the outer end of the bracket arm 10 is a buffer 29 of rubber or similar material, which is attached to the arm through the medium of a screw 30, the head of which is set within the buffer, so that the latter may engage the base board or other surface without in any way marring its finish.
While the invention is shown and described as applied to a door for the purpose of preventing its accidental closing, the invention may be constructed so as to be set to prevent the opening of the door. It is often desirable that the door be only partly open and secured against further opening and while the invention as previously described is adapted to prevent the accidental closing of the door, in the said invention there may be made slight modifications ap plied to the door to prevent its forcible opening.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent. The right is reserved to make such changes in the form and proportion of the invention as will fall within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A door stop embodying a horizontally disposed hollow bracket arm of substantial U-shape in cross section, a closed wall at the outer end of said arm and a shoe pivotally mounted within the arm and adapted to engage the closed outer wall to limit the movement of the shoe in one direction.
2. A door stop embodying a horizontally disposed bracket arm having a longitudinally disposed groove in its under surface and an opening in its top surface communicatingi with said groove, an engaging shoe pivotally mounted within said groove and a spring located within the groove, said spring having one end secured to said arm and its opposite free end positioned within said opening for engagement with the pivotally mounted shoe for yieldingly holding the latter against movement.
