Description

E. R. IILARK.
Sewing-Machine Tables.
INVENT ATTUBNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEl ELIAS It. CLARK, OF MARSHFIELD, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM L. HAMILTON, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHlNE TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,075, dated June 16, 1874; application filed December 20, 1873.
To all whom fit may concer/n:
Be it known that I, ELIAS R. CLARK, of Marshfield, in the county of Warren and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a table-top, to which the sewing-machine is connected, which is detachable from the top of the stand, and a sliding top for said stand, contrived in a peculiar and simple manner, to take the machine olf the stand when not in use and in close it within the case under the sliding top, and when it is in use to adjust the sliding top so as to be used as an extension of the top of the machine.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the machine when the detachable top, containing the sewing mechanism, is inclosed within the case; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line m w of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is an inclosed stand containing the balance-wheel B and'treadle in the lower part, and having a wide door, C, on the front side, and a smaller one, D, opposite. E is the top plate, 011 which the sewing mechanism is fixed 5 and F is the sliding top, which takes the placel 0f top E when the machine is inclosed, and forms the extension of the top when the machine is adjusted Vfor use. A small piece, G, of the top, is permanently xed across one end ofthe stand, land one end ot' both tops E and F matches into it at H when in position, and when the slide F is extended, and the machine in working position, both tops match together at I, so that top E is secured by top F, and the latter isfastened by a bolt, J. rlhis bolt also fastens top F when E is removed and F is in its place. The' top F slides in ways K, one of which is in the case side, and the other is in a cross-bar, L, instead of the front slde, which swings open to afford access to the treadle for working the machine, also to swing around under the top E, when it is extended, to support it at the front side. At the back an arm, M, slides out lto support said top. The top E is divided longitudinally, and hinged together at N, so as to fold. upward, as indicated in Fig. l, when the machine is placed within the case on the bars l), which are arranged in the inclined position represented, to facilitate the sliding' of the machine down into the case and up into position, and save the direct lift that would be necessary if said bars were arranged horizontallyr in the 'case deep enough to set the machine fully below the top.`
To adjust the machine for use, the sliding top is first drawn back to the left as far as it will go, and rested on the open door O and arm M The top E is then pulled forward up to the top of the front on bar L, and shifted to the right into stationarypart G. Then top F is shifted forward and engaged with it and fastened by the bolt C.
The method of inclosing the machine in the case will be readily understood from the foregoing.
The top E is provided with tapered cleats Q on the under side, which hold the upper edge high enough to rise over the bar L when it is pulled up.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of sliding extension F, removable plate E, and fixed edge piece G, respectively tongued and grooved, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the tapered cleats Q with the tops E and bars I), substantially as specified.
ELIAS It. CLARK.

FRANK BROWN, ALFRED SMITH.
