PORTABLE-SEWING-MACHINE srn vn,
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES D. STUART, acitizen of the United States, residingat New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in Portable-Sewing-llclachine Stands; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitut-e part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front view of a sewing machine stand constructed in accordance with my invention shown in the folded position and inclosed by a cover which is partly broken away.
Fig. 2, a side view of the same with the cover removed.
Fig. 3, a side view of the stand in its extended or ope "ating position shown partly in section.
This invention relates to an improvement in portable sewing machine stands. In the common arrangement of portable sewing machines, they are adapted to be driven by hand which is necessarily somewhat inconvenient as it only allowsone hand to be used in guiding the work. Portable machines adapted to be driven by electricity have also been used but it is not always possible or convenient to secure the necessary power. The object of this invention is to provide a portable sewing machine stand which is adapted to be folded into small compass to be conveniently carried about and which permits the use of a foot treadle for operating the machine and the invention consists as hereinafter described and particularly cited in claims. In carrying out my invention, I employ a base st of the suitable size and on this base I mount three rectangular frainesfi, 6 and T. The lower bar 8 of the intermediate frame 6 is connected by a hinge 9 to the top bar 10 of the lower frame 5 and the lower bar 11 is connected by a hinge 12 with the rear face ofthe top bar 13 of the intermediate frame 6 and a sewing machine head 14 of any approved design is secured to the upper face of the top bar 15 of the upper frame 7. ,Nhen the frames are eX- tendcd and so as to stand one upon the other, they are held in position by latches l6 and 17 so as to form a rigid upright of convenient Specification of Letters Patent. height for operation. Mounted on the base 4: is a foot treadle 18 connected by a link 19 in the usual way with a driving-wheel 20 which is pivotally mounted on the inner wall 21 of the lower frame 5 over which driving-whecl 20 a belt 22 passes extending over the usualbelt wheel 23 on the sewing machine head. This belt passes up through clearance holes formed for it in the top bar of the lower frame, the lower and top bar of the intermediate frame and the lower and top bars of the upper frame, and so that the machine may be driven from the foot treadle 18 in the usual manner of sewing machines. When not in use or to be transported, the latches 16 and 17 will be disengaged and the intermediate frame 6 turned down against the front of the lower frame 5 and the upper frame 6 turned back against the rear face of the intermediate frame, the upper frame 5 being enough shorter than the intermediate frame so that the head of the machine will not extend above the intermediate frame when in the folded position and will clear the treadle. When folded, the several frames are connected together by latches 2a and 25 and a cover 26 will be provided which will set over the base and adapted to be connected thereto, the cover being provided with a handle 27 by which the device may be readily carried. I thus provide a stand for a pedal-driven sewing machine which is adapted to be folded into small space for transportation, is extremely simple and economical in construction both of material and labor.
I claim:
1. it sewingmachine stand comprising a base, a plurality of rectangular frames hinged together whereby they may be mounted one upon the other, a sewing-machine head mounted in the upper frame, a treadle mounted on the said base, a drivingwheel mounted in the lower frame and adapted to be driven by the said treadle, a belt extending over said driving-wheel and int-o connection with the sewingmachine head, said frames formed with clearance holes for said belt and means for holding the frames in position one upon the other and in the folded position substantially as described.
2. A sewing machine stand comprising a base, a lower frame mounted thereon, an intermediate rectangular frame hinged at its bottom to the top of the lower frame, an
upper rectangular frame hinged at its bottom to thetop of the intermediate frame, a sewing machine head mounted on the top of the upper frame, a foot treadle mounted on 5 the said base, adriving wheel mounted in the lower frame and adapted to be turned gby said treadle, a belt extending over said driving-wheel and into connection with the sewing machine head and clearance holes formed for the belt through the said frames. 3. A sewing machine stand comprising a base, three rectangular frames superimposed one upon the other, the bottom of the inter-. mediate frame hinged to the top of the lower 7 frame and the upper frame hinged to the top 7 of-the intermediate frame, a sewing machine head mounted on the top of the upper frame,
a treadle mounted on the said base, a driving-wheel mounted in the lower frame and adapted to be turned by said foot treadle, a belt extending over said driving-wheel and in connection with the sewing machine head, said frames formed with clearance holes for said'belt and means for holding the frames in position one upon the other and in the folded position substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES D. STUART.
