Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MARY MCCABE and WILLIAM J. MoCABn, citizens of the United tates, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to attachments for sewing machines and in particular to a fold able support for sewing machines.
An object of our invention is to give a foldable support having two upright standards in parallel position to each other and carrying the driving gear therefor.
Another object of our invention is to so arrange the folded parts that when folded, they will be as compact and close fitting as it is possible to arrange them.
With these and other objects in view to be developed as we proceed with our specification, we shall proceed to explain the same in which similar characters of reference refer to similar parts in the drawings, and in which a preferred embodiment is shown therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevational view of our device in, open or operable position. Fig. 2, a top plan view of the table a portion of our device. Fig. 3, a top plan view of our treadle in assembled position. Fig. 4, a side view of our device in open position in carrying the driving mechanism. Fig. 5 is a side view of the opposite side of our device to that shown in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 is the base member to our foldable side which carries the driving mechanism, consisting of the treadle wheel 3, driving pitman 4 and treadle 5, and the skirt protector 2.
The treadle can be of any preferred structure but in the preferred embodiment as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings it consists of an open framework 6, having closed-in portions 7 and 8 to act as a foot rest for the toe and heel portions of the foot. The frame 6 is mounted for oscillatory action on the shaft 9, and has at one end thereof, an extension 10 to which is attached our pitman connection 11, the driving pitman 4 being pivotally connected to the same. Pivotally connected as at 12 to the upper portion of that the table can be folded back against the,
exterior surface of the section 13, which in turn is folded outward and downward against the exterior surface of the member 1 previously mentioned.
A second standard having a base member 17 is used, said base member being pivotally hinged thereto as at 18, a foldable section 19, which in turn has pivoted to it as at 20 a second foldable section 21, these foldable sections being adapted to fold inward against each other as is clearly obvious in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A flange locking support 22 is fastened to the inner surface of the section 21 at the upper edge thereof and is adapted to support the outer end of our table 16 and to be locked in said position by means of a pin 23 or other suitable fastening device which projects from the under surface of table 16, and is adapted to seat in apertures running through our member 22.
To thoroughly brace our table 16 and to complete a rigid structure of our foldable section, when in open position we utilize the advantage of a brace member 24 which is pivoted as at 25 to the under portion of our table and which has a hook or inturned portion 26, adapted to clamp into our foldable section 21 in any preferred manner to bind the same. We also use a second brace member 27 which is pivotally connected to the under surface of our table 16, as at 28 and which is connected to the lug 15 previously described by a bolt, pin 29 or other suitable fastening device. When our device is in open position, table set to its assembled place and braces clamp into their normal position, we get a very rigid and substantial device. For further convenience we can support a drawer 30 from the under side of our table 16 by means of right angle flanges 31 and 32.
Hingedly connected to the lower edge of our base section 17 is a foot device 33, said device being hinged to the section 17 as at 34, the device '33 having downturned foot portions 35 and 36 as clearly shown inFig. 5 of the drawings. Midway of our device adapted to slide over the collar 38, and lock the shaft and consequently the treadle into open position when in use. The sleeve or thimble 41 is locked for this purpose by bolts 42 or other suitable device.
In operation we release the sewing machine from the hole 45, release our brace members 24 and 27, throw our table 16 over against the outer surface of the member 13, and then fold said member 13 down against the member 1, thereby bringing the table 16 between section 13 and the member 1. We next take and release our thimble 41, slide it back over the collar 38, and lift our shaft and treadle until it is in a vertical position thereby striking the pitman 4. We next fold the section 21 against the inner surface of the section 19, and in turn fold the sec- C'opies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents tion 19 against the inner surface of our base member 17 thereby bringing the section 21 between the section 19 and the base member 17. We then fold our section 33 upward and bring our folded standard as now described in against the treadle, thereby having a compact and convenient portable device.
Having now described our invention and showing the operation thereof, what we dey sire to claim by Letters Patent is A device of the character described, com prising a standard base having an upper hinged section adapted to fold'outwardly thereon, a table hinged to said upper section adapted to fold outwardly thereon so that when said upper hinged section is folded outwardly said table will rest between said base and said upper hinged section, driving means arranged upon said base, actuating means pivotally mounted to actuate the same, a second standard base having upper hinged sections, connected to said actuating means, said second mentioned base adapted to be positioned against said first mentioned base when folded, and said table adapted to be fastened to said second mentioned base when in open position, and bracing means mounted between said table and both of said standard bases when in open position.
