To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. TODD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Ipswich, in the county of Essex and State of lvlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Frames for Portable Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable driving mechanisms for revoluble working tools, such, for instance, as emery wheels and the like, and has for its object the production of an inexpensive device which may be folded into a small space for transportation and may be set up readily when it is desired to operate it.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.

in the drawings, 10 represents a base having secured thereto the lower end of a leg 11 formed in two parts pivoted together at 12. The upper end of the leg 11 is bifurcated and straddles the rib 13 of a frame 1 This frame 14 is secured in fixed position to the leg 11 by means of the bolts 15. These bolts 15 may be removed when desired to separate the frame 1 f from the leg 11 to permit said frame being secured to a bench by means of the clamping bolt 17. The upper end of the frame 14 has secured thereto a machine herein shown 'as an emery wheel 50 and mechanism by which rotary movement is imparted thereto. The driving mechanism for said emery wheel has secured thereto the strap 26, the opposite end of which is secured to the end of a lever 28 pivoted at 29 to the leg 11. The lever 28 is provided with a plurality of perforations 30 intermediate its outer end and the pivot 29. One end of a connector 31 is adapted to extend through either of these openings 30 while the opposite end of said connector is attached to the outer end of a treadle 32 pivoted at 33 to the base 10. It is obvious that when the foot is placed on the treadle 32 and said treadle is depressed the lever 28 will be moved about the pivot 29 and cause a pull upon the flexible belt or strap 26. It is obvious that by changing the end of the conmotor from one perforation 30 to one of the companion perforations a variation in speed may be obtained. The casing 18 is provided with a rearward extension 3-1 to which may be pivoted at 35 a brace 36 the outer end of which is adapted to rest against the wall of a building, or this brace may be secured to said Wall by means of screws extending through the openings 37 in the outer end of said brace. The upper end of the lower member of the leg 11 is provided with the stop member 38 against which the upper portion of the leg 11 rests when said leg is in extended position. To prevent the leg folding accidentally when the device is in operation a locking device 39 is pivoted at 10 to the lower end of the upper part of the leg, said locking member 39 being provided with flanges 41 engaging with opposite sides of the lower portion of the leg 11.
While an emery wheel is shown and described, it is obvious that some other form of working tool may be substituted therefor, and said tool may be mounted on the casing 18 in any well known manner.
The casing 18 is provided with a forward extension 51 to which is adjustably secured by means of the pulley 52 a work support 53. This work support is provided with a depending wall M on the lower end of which is formed a finger rest or shelf 55. This rest 55 is adapted to support the hand of the operator while holding the work being operated upon by means of the working tool 50. The work support 53 has pivoted thereto, at 56, a scissors rest 57 adapted to support one blade of the scissors while the other blade is being operated upon by means of the working tool 50. In order to operate the working tool the operator depresses the treadle 52by means of his foot and causes a pull upon the strap 26.
When the work of the device has been completed it may be folded up into small compass by moving the brace 36 about its pivot 35 in the direction of the arrow 6, moving the treadle 32 about its hinge 33 in the direction of the arrow 0, and the lower portion of the leg 11 about the pivot 12 in the direction of the arrow d. In this folded condition the driving mechanism occupies but little space and can be easily transported from one point to another and may be very quickly set up again whenever its use is desired.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the device will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base provided with a leg extending upwardly therefrom; a brace pivoted to the upper end of said leg and adapted to have its outer end positioned against a wall; a machine secured to the upper end of said leg; and a treadle pivoted to said base and adapted to operate the driving mechanism of said machine, said treadle being adapted to fold against said support when the machine is not in use.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base provided with a leg extending upwardly therefrom; a brace one end of which is adapted to be positioned against a wall while the other end is pivoted tothe upper end of said leg; a machine secured to the upper end of said leg; a treadle pivoted to said base and adapted to be positioned lengthwise of said support when the machine is not in use; a lever pivoted to the upper part of said leg and adapted to operate the drivingmechanism of said machine; and a connector between said lever and treadle.
In a device of the class described, the combination of a base provided with a leg extending upwardly therefrom; a machine secured to the upper end of said leg; and a wallbrace pivoted to the upper end of said leg and adapted to be folded against the same when the device is not in use and to be positioned against a wall when it is desired to use said machine.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base provided with a folding leg extending upwardly therefrom; a machine upon the upper end of said leg; a brace one end of which is adapted to be positioned against a wall while the other end is pivoted to the upper end of said leg; and means on said leg to prevent the folding thereof.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base provided with an upwardly extending two part leg pivoted together; a stop member secured to the outer end of the lower part to limit the movement of the upper part about its pivot; a machine mounted on the upper end of said leg; and a wall brace pivoted to the upper end of said leg and adapted to be positioned parallel thereto when not in use.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base provided with an upwardly extending two part leg pivoted to gether; a stop member secured to the outer end of the lower part to limit the movement of the upper part about its pivot; a bifurcated locking member pivoted to said upper part and engaging the lower part; a machine mounted on the upper end of said leg; and a wall brace pivoted to the upper end of said leg and adapted to be positioned parallel thereto when not in use.
'7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base; a folding support secured thereto; a threadle hinged to said base and adapted to be positioned parallel with said support when not in use; a wall brace hinged to the upper end of said support and adapted to be positioned parallel thereto when not in use; a machine at the upper end of said support; a lever pivotally secured to said folding support and adapted to operate the driving mechanism of said machine, said lever being adapted to be positioned against and parallel to said support when not in use; and a flexible connector interposed between an intermei'liate portion of said lever and the end of said treadle.
