Description
' W. S. ORTH CALENDAR Filed Feb. 8, 1923.
WITNESSES INVENTOI? A Tram/us Patented July 15, 1924.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM S. ORTH, OF DUNKIRK, OHIO.
CALENDAR.
Application filed February 8, 1923. Serial No. 617,822.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM S. ORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dunkirk, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Calendar. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in calendars and has particular reference to a frame for perpetual calendars.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved construction over that shown in my previous Patent No. 1,236,974, issued August 14th, 1917.
Another object is to provide a calendar frame of neat and attractive appearance which is so constructed as to permit of the same being manufactured at a minimum cost.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the calen dar constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a similar View on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and 4 Figure 4 is a detail perspective View of an auxiliary frame employed in connection with the invention.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing as comprising a main frame 5, preferably formed of a single piece of material such as sheet metal and including the upright members 6 and the base portion 7 the upright members being joined at their upper ends by the supporting bar 8 and intermediate their ends by the cross bar 9.
In order to support the frame in a vertical position the base portion 7 is out along upwardly converging lines to form the end supporting legs 10 and the intermediate supporting leg 11. The legs 10 and 11v are bent in opposite directions, as clearly shown in Figure 2, at any desirable angle with respect to the frame 5 and by thus separating the legs it will be obvious that the same will form a substantial support for the calendar to permit it being placed upon a desk or other support. The base portion 7 is provided with suitable openings 12 for receiving rings 13 which may be utilized in sup porting cards 141 on the outer surfaces of the legs 10 and 11, which cards may contain suitable indicia, such as advertising matter or the like.
The upper cross bar 8 is provided adjacent each end thereof with an angular notch 15, each of which is adapted to receive therein a split ring 16 which passes through aligned openings formed in a series of cards 17, each of which bears the name or abbreviation of one of the days of the week, there being accordingly seven of these cards. The names or abbreviations of the various days of the week are so printed onthe cards that the outermost cards on opposite sides of the calendar will always contain the same name or abbreviation.
The intermediate cross bar 9 is also provided with angular notches 18 adjacent each end thereof which receive the split rings 19 also passing through registering openings in a plurality of cards 20 bearing the numerals from 1 to 31 representing the dates of a month, the same numeral appearing on opposite sides of the calendar.
The upper end of each of the side members 6 of the frame 5 is reduced, as in dicated at 21, to accommodate an auxiliary supporting frame 22 of substantially U shaped formation having its extremities bent to provide bearings 23 which receive the ends of the cross bar 8 exteriorly of the angular notches 15. In this manner the cards 17 are free to swing within the frame 22. The intermediate portion of the frame 22 is provided with angular notches 24. which receive the split rings 25 supporting the cards 26 hearing the monthly designations. which are the same on opposite sides of the calendar, there being twelve of the cards 26, as will be obvious.
It will be apparent that since the frame 22 is swingingly supported on the cross bar 8 the same may be moved in either direction with respect to the frame to permit of one of the cards 20 being turned on its supporting rings 19 and that likewise the cards 17 may be swung rearwardly or forwardly to permit of a turning of one of the cards 26.
IVhat is claimed is:
1. In a calendar, a frame formed from a single sheet of material including opposed side members and supporting cross bars joining the same, said cross bars having angular notches in their upper edges the base of said sheet being split and the split portions being bent in opposite directions to form supports for the frame, rings disposed in said angular notches, and a plurality of cards supported by said rings.
2. In a calendar, :1 frame formed from a single sheet of material including side members and supporting cross bars joining the same, said side members being reduced for a portion of their length adjacent one of said cross bars, the base of said frame being split to form angularly disposed supporting legs, an auxiliary frame swingingly supported by one of said cross bars and having portions thereof accommodated in the reduced portions of said side members, and series of cards swingingly suspended from said cross bars and auxiliary frame.
