IMPROVEMENT lN CALENDARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,391, dated March 2, 1875 application filed December 30, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JoHN'J. GAULON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Movable- Gard Calendars, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of calendars in which the day, month, and numeral cards may be shifted perpetually; and the object is to cheapen and simplify the construction, and at the same time retain all the qualities of neatness, taste, beauty, and intrinsic value for the purpose of reference.

The leading features of novelty in my invention consist in printing the cards bearing the names of the days and months on opposite sides and edges, so that very few cards are required for a full yearly calendar.

The three kinds of cards used are of different widths, so that when the widest cards are arranged behind, the names printed thereon appear above'the narrower cards in front, all of the sets of cards resting upon the same level support.

Another feature of my invention consists in the method of constructing the case for holding the cards of the calendar.

In the drawings, Figure l is a general per- SPGOlSlXG view of my invention. Fig. 2 shows the relative sizes of the cards used and the manner of printing the names and figures thereon. Figs. 3, 3 and 3 are, respectively, perspective and sectional views, showing the clip-case for holding the cards.

I prefer to use a printed calendar-card, A, of the ordinary kind, as a backing for my calendar, but a plain unprinted card or board would answer. However, if a printed calendar is used a blank space must be left at or near the center fggthe card -case. This case is formed of three sheet-metal clips, B B, shaped in the manner shown in Figs. 3 3 and 3, and arranged upon the card A, so as to embrace the bottom and ends of the cards 0 D E, as in Fig. 1. Each clip has two tongues, a a, formed from a lower lip, c, and bent downward, as represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 3

In attaching the clips to the card A the tongues a a are passed through slits in the same, and firmly clinched at the back. The

lower lip c of the clip rests upon the card A; the body 6 rises perpendicularly therefrom, and the upper lip i is bent at right angles to the body, and embraces the cards of the calendar, as shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 2 I have shown but one side of each class of card, as my invention will be fully understood by reference thereto, in connection with the following description.

The day-cards 0 have the names of the days of the week printed thereon on both sides and upon opposite edges, so that one card bears four names. By this arrangement only two cards are needed. These cards are the widest of the three kinds used. c I

The month-card Dis narrower than the daycard, so that when placed in. front the name printed on the latter may appear above it, as shown. These cards bear the names of the months printed upon opposite sides and edges, like the day-cards, and but three of them are required for the twelve months.

The numeral-cards E are sixteen in number, and have the numerals of the days of the month printed on both sides. They are narrower than the cards D, so that the name of the month may appear above them, as shown.

By the use of cards of different widths, arranged as shown, all of them may rest upon the same clip at the bottom.

I am aware that the use of movable cards for this purpose is very old; also, that cards or strips with the names of the days or months printed on both sides, and arranged to slide behind another card having an aperture therein, have been used but What I claim as new is 1. In a movable-card calendar, the combination of the day-cards 0, having the names of the days printed on opposite sides and edges thereof, the month-cards D, having the names of the months printed thereon in a like manner, the numeral-cards E, with the numerals printed on both sides, each set being, respectively, wider than the one next succeeding, as described, and a suitable clip frame or case, B B, for holding and binding them together, attached to a backing, A, substantially in the manner shown, and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a movable-card calendar, the holder or case for the cards, composed of a back card,

A, and the clips B B, said clips being constructed in the manner shown, with tongues a a, lower lip a, body 6, and upper lip i, and attached by clinching t0 the back card, substantielly as shown, and for the purposes specified.
