DOOR-FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,834, dated May 6, 1856.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, NILLARD H. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do.

hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

The improvements I have made in my door fastener renders them portable and convenient in an eminent degree and adapts it to the purposes of securing doors successfully where the moldings on the jamb are in close proximity to the rabbet of the frame or where the thickness of the door may vary. By the use of an adjusting screw nut on the stem of the fastener I am enabled to accommodate it to a varying thickness of the door or angle of the door and jamb and molding. The compact-ness of the fas# tener by which its portability is obtained, is by the division of the bolt plate and hinging it on the stem of the fastener. By folding the wings forming the plate and turning the hook over them, it may be carried in the pocket without inconvenience.

To enable others to make and use my improvement it is described as follows.

(a) is a staple hook with two prongs, bent at right angles; (1)) a strong wire stem to which the hook (a) is attached and hinged; (c) is a screw cut on said stem; and (d) a screw nut working thereon and by the turning thereof the fastener is secured and adjusted; (e e) are wings hinged on the stem forming when open (as seen in Figure l) a bolt plate. From the position the nut (d) occupies relatively to the upper joint of hinge of the wings, it not only forces the bolt plate toward the door, but also withdraws the plate in releasing it.

It is to be noticed that on one of the wings (e) there are stops (f f,) whose oflice is to keep the wings spread when on the door.

To apply the fastener to a door place the hooks ofthe staple (a) against the rabbet of the frame, the wings (e c) being folded out of the way; then close the door, forcing the hooks of into the frame; open the wings placing them square across the line of the door, observing to have the stops on the plate downward; then turn the screw nut (d) and the wings of the plate will accommodate themselves to the jamb, molding and door, or to the ground irrespective of their relation to the door itself. To remove it and allow the door to be opened, slacken the stem by turning the screw nut, then fold the wings of the plate and bring them in line with the edge of the door, turn the stem b out of the way, so that the door may be opened, and the claws of the hook withdrawn from the jamb.

Having described my improvement what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The use of the screw nut (d) working on the hinged stem (b) as a means of adjustment of the plate c e, when employed in combination with the staple hook (a) all operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as set forth.
